Album Review

All four songs from Matt Hires' first EP, Live from the Hotel Café, make additional appearances on his full-length debut, which expands the songwriter's acoustic sound into something slick and polished. As before, the quaver in Hires' voice is nearly omnipresent, although the sheer energy of "Listen to Me Now" effectively masks that vocal tic. Although ballads make frequent appearances, Take Us to the Start sounds best at its most brisk, when Hires trades the coffeehouse aspirations of his slower songs for something more akin to driving, mainstream pop/rock.

Great new artist...high hopes

i have high hopes for Matt Hires' music...great pop/rock/folk with a lot of soul, if tentative...love the breathy melodies...i hear some counting crows, dave matthews, dave barnes...but matt is his own man and artist...if you like any of those artists should check matt's music out...

Long Awaited!

When I saw Matt Hires in concert last year (with Meaghan Smith and Eric Hutchinson), I fell in love! I bought the Hotel Cafe EP but it was lacking my favorite song, "State Lines". At the concert, Hires performed the song with Meaghan Smith and her unique voice really added something special to the piece. I'm so happy he has a proper CD out now, I basically flipped out when I saw it on my "Recommended for You". Other exceptional tracks include "Honey Let Me Sing You A Song", "O Sunrise" and "You Are The One". A great singer/songwriter, with loads of talent to share.

A good listen

Wow, good album. This is the first album I've encountered on iTunes in a while that was worth purchasing all songs. Take a chance, I'm glad I did!

Singer/songwriter Matt Hires made his recording debut at the age of 22, when the Florida native introduced his confessional songcraft with the Live from the Hotel Cafe EP. Hires had begun writing music during his late teens, when his father jump-started his son's career by giving him a 1977 acoustic guitar. Before long, he'd pieced together a band with several friends; the rock group named itself Brer and released two records before calling it quits. Hires continued onward as a solo musician, landing...
