Classic Torme and Rich

This gem was unavailable for so long both on vinyl and disc, it's nice to see it's finally made it to iTunes. "Together Again for the First Time" was recorded in 1978 and was the only time these two giants recorded together, but it sounds like they played their entire careers together. The disc begins with "Yesterday" an upbeat tune with the full complement of a combination of the Buddy Rich Orchestra and Mel's own musicians. The set also includes a nice rendition of "You Are the Sunshine of My Life" and ends with Mel's tribute to the "First Lady of Song," Ella Fitzgerald with an amazing scat that pays homage to the great Ella. This is a must for any Buddy Rich or Mel Tormé fan.

Fortunately, my father introduced me to Torme' when I was a youngster, I grew up appreciating all the standard singers like Sinatra, Nat Cole, Ella. I got to meet Torme a few times in my life and saw him on several occasions, this album blows away every live performance I ever saw---and that's saying volumes! Recorded in the studio, this album is insane, pay attention and hang with Blues in the Night as it builds into one of the most wild jazz crescendos you have ever heard. This album is a masterpiece, the only thing lacking is a dozen more songs. I miss these guys, listen to this and you'll see why!

I bouth the CD the year it came out, but does not play on the new CD players

So finding this here on iTunes was like fonding a lost friend. Thank you, this is an AMAZING set of songs!

Mel Tormé was a jazz-oriented pop singer who worked at his craft steadily from the '40s to the '90s, primarily in nightclubs and concert halls. In his 1988 autobiography, It Wasn't All Velvet (its title a reference to his nickname, "The Velvet Fog," bestowed upon him by a disc jockey in the '40s to describe his husky, wide-ranging voice), he mentioned a wish that he had been born ten years earlier, that is, in 1915 rather than 1925. If he had had his wish, Tormé would have been an exact contemporary...
