Album Review

Gathering the best of his all-too-brief recording career, You Better Run: The Essential Junior Kimbrough includes most of his best-known songs, including "Done Got Old," "Meet Me in the City," "You Better Run," and "All Night Long." The collection does a good job of representing each of Kimbrough's albums, ranging from the rough-and-ready sound of All Night Long; Sad Days, Lonely Nights' dark, swampy feel (exemplified here by the title track and "Old Black Mattie"); the dense sonics of Most Things Haven't Worked Out's title track; and the gritty, uncompromising edge to God Knows I Tried's "Tramp." For anyone unsure where to dive into Kimbrough's catalog, You Better Run offers the ideal starting point.

Bone Chilling Blues

I've heard Junior's songs covered by North Mississippi Allstars and Buddy Guy two of my favorite artists and I wanted to get some of his stuff. This is a great sampler of Junior Kimbrough, his stlye of blues chills you to the bone. This is not the slick urban blues of Albert collins or The three kings (Albert, B.B. and Freddie) this is bone chilling down and dirty hill country blues. Listening to junior's guitar snake in and out while his voice moans the blues give you an errie feeling especially on "You better Run" which is down right scary and "Tramp", the instrumental "Most things haven't worked out" is great. If you like North Mississippi Allstars and Buddy Guy's Sweet tea check out this great collection of spooky Hill country tunes. If you want urban blues with creamy tones and slick solos check out the above mentioned artists.

Its a sin...release me and let me love again

The song 'Release Me' with Charlie Feathers-a legend in rockabilly-is worth the whole 9.99 you'll pay. Kimbrough is a real down to earth player and singer. One time I heard the Stooges cover 'You better run" and was hooked. Juke joint to the MS.

well well well

if you like no frills blues, this is it. Go for it, sit back and enjoy

Cited as a prime early influence by rockabilly pioneer Charlie Feathers, Mississippi Delta bluesman Junior Kimbrough's modal, hypnotic blues vision remained a regional sensation for most of his career. He finally transcended the confines of his region in the early '90s, when he appeared in the 1991 movie Deep Blues and on its Anxious/Atlantic soundtrack, leading to his own debut for Fat Possum Records, All Night Long.
