iTunes Review

At the time of recording, no one in the band was older than 19, making this one of the truest statements of teen rock rebellion ever committed to tape. Because the Runaways were the first major all-girl hard-rock group, people doubted that they had the power and attitude to compete with macho rock kings like Led Zeppelin and Black Sabbath. The Runaways proved that these five California adolescents had as much swagger as Zeppelin, Sabbath and KISS combined. “Cherry Bomb” is the canonical song here, and it is as much a blueprint for the rock ‘n’ roll single as “Johnny B. Goode” or “Wild Thing.” However, “Is It Day Or Night?,” “You Drive Me Wild,” “American Nights” and “Dead End Justice” are just as mean and juicy. The group’s breakout stars were Joan Jett and Cherie Currie, but the album draws its primal electricity from drummer Sandy West and lead guitarist Lita Ford. (Not to mention the contributions of the group’s creepy guru and manager Kim Fowley, who produced the album and co-wrote most of the songs with Jett.) At a time when rock music was in rapid transition, The Runaways bridged the chunky dance-floor swing of glam to the raw-boned rebellion of punk.

I'm old ...

. . . . and this sounds just as awesome as when I held the vinyl in my hands and played it till the grooves were gone. I love the Runaways, I love Joan Jett, Cheri Currie , Sandy West , Jackie Fox and yes, even rock bad girl Lita Ford. I was crushed when they broke up. I love the GoGo's but , they just weren't the Runaways. I want to say smart things about the songs, that Cherry Bomb is the best, it captures female anger and aggression and told you these aren't princesses , these are dark avenging angels that you WILL PAY ATTENTION or they will steal you car and set fire to your house ! This is the kind of first album every artist dreams of. This was my generation and we were bad you wimps !

Suzi Quatro , try listening to early Suzi and tell me Joan didn't pay homage .

QUEENS OF ROCK!

I LOVE The Runaways!!! I'm a TEENAGER, and I think they're awesome! And, no, I don't like them just because Kristen Stewart from twilight plays Joan in the movie. I actually hate twilight. I love them because their music is so pure and awesome! This may be random, but I sorta look like Cherie when she was younger. Anyway, the runaways are hands down my FAVORITE band of all time! I love all of these songs, but my favorite is dead end justice. I miss this kind of music. We should have more artists like this today. Ok I'm done ranting now. THE RUNAWAYS ROCK FOREVER!!!

True rock

This is a pure, unadulterated example of what real rock used to be and still is, not like the screaming cut-myself-to-sleep whiney "music" we have today. I'm 17, and I think that the rock of our previous generations beats ours by a landslide. I don't simply like Joan Jett and her Runaways because Kristen Stewart and Dakota Fanning are making a movie about them (although I must admit, when Kristen's not in Twilight, she's smokin' hot), I like them because they're a sultry, sensational, in-your-face-and-proud-of-it, kick-@ss pillar of the rock world, and they don't give a damn who knows it. Also, if you like this band, you should check out Joan Jett and the Blackhearts. Joan Jett and Cherie Curry will always remain Goddesses of Rock!

Biography

Formed: 1975 in Los Angeles, CA

Genre: Rock

Years Active: '70s

Often dismissed during their existence as a crass marketing gimmick, the Runaways have grown in stature over the years as the first all-female band to make a substantial impression on the public by playing loud, straight-up, guitar-driven rock & roll. Since all of the members were teenagers (some of whom were still learning to play their instruments when they passed their auditions), the band's music was frequently raw and amateurish, but it neatly combined American heavy metal with the newly...
