Be Aware

Just want to issue some words of caution if you are looking for "Hurry Up This Way Again". The version included on this release is not the original, rather it is a version recorded in 2005 for the release of this cd. I would not recommend the version included here, as it does not sound anything close to the original. Fortunately though, all of the other songs included here are the originals, and most of them are the full length versions. The one noteable exception to that is "People Make the World Go Round". I absolutely recommend getting the full length (6 minutes plus) version of that song rather than the one featured here. Other than that, this is probably the best collection of Stylistics songs you are going to find assembled together.

Betcha By Golly Wow!

Wow only two reviews! Where are the ol Skoolers at to represent. Now this cats sing about love you don't know love until you listen to THE STYLISTICS. The lead singer, Russell Thompkins. Jr one of the best falsettos ever. Definitely recommend Break Up To Make Up and Betcha By Golly Wow.

Overlong, but the hits are here

None of the Stylistics' albums were completely consistent, although many are easier to hear in one sitting than this ambitious compilation. Still, every hit the group experienced is here, including their only #1 U.K. single, the swirling "Can't Give You Anything (But My Love)", which didn't chart in the U.S. and missed the cut on many previous Stylistics collections. "You Make Me Feel Brand New" is their biggest U.S. hit, a timeless wedding/prom standard surrounded by many other gorgeous love declarations in this collection, while transatlantic singles and album tracks maintain the group's unparalelled romantic prowess. "People Make the World Go Round", "Rockin' Roll Baby", and "Heavy Falling Out" proved the group could convey harder, topical tales without sacrificing their trademark harmonies and vulnerability. Nevertheless, the Stylistics are deservedly remembered as the sweet, sometimes bittersweet, harmony group led by Russell Thompkins Jr.'s emotional falsetto, and if this compilation carries on a bit too long, it probably won't bother those who smile as they hear one of its many familiar or nearly-forgotten moments of beauty.

Formed: 1968 in Philadelphia, PA

Genre: R&B/Soul

Years Active: '60s, '70s, '80s, '90s, '00s, '10s

After the Spinners and the O'Jays, the Stylistics were the leading Philly soul group produced by Thom Bell. During the early '70s, the band had 12 straight Top Ten hits, including "You Are Everything," "Betcha by Golly, Wow," "I'm Stone in Love With You," "Break Up to Make Up," and "You Make Me Feel Brand New." Of all their peers, the Stylistics were one of the smoothest and sweetest soul groups of their era. All of their hits were ballads, graced by the soaring falsetto of Russell Thompkins, Jr....
