Album Review

A more accurate title for this two-disc anthology would be The Complete ABC A- and B-Sides 1961-1968 since it does not contain the 1968 singles the Impressions released on Curtom. Some of those 1968 Curtom singles, including "Fool for You" and "This Is My Country," were among the group's most successful, peaking within the Top Ten of Billboard's R&B chart. Those songs can be had on any of several other anthologies, and though this set lacks them, it is still substantial. It's highlighted by "Gypsy Woman" (number two R&B, 1961), "It's All Right" (number one R&B, 1963), "Keep on Pushing" (number 10 pop, 1964), and "People Get Ready" (number three R&B, 1965).

I love it

I've been waiting a very long time for this, Curtis mayfield and the Impressions were one of the greatest. Thank you iTunes for adding this to your site

The best compilation of the Impressions' 60's era recordings

Not just stuff like 'Gypsy Woman' but the real nitty gritty stuff like "Falling in Love With You" and "This Must End"...I have a few of these rarely heard classics scattered about on a few scratched up '45's on the old ABC Paramount label; it is good to have them in a digital format..I thought I would never hear a clean version of these songs again. This is great stuff!!!

Great Music!

Wow! I'm 61 years old and listening to the Impressions sing "I'm SoProud" bring back a lot of memories, make me feel like I'm in high school again, a lot of slow dragging on that one! The complete set is fantastic. Music like this will never go away.

Biography

Formed: 1958 in Chicago, IL

Genre: R&B/Soul

Years Active: '50s, '60s, '70s, '10s

The quintessential Chicago soul group, the Impressions' place in R&B history would be secure if they'd done nothing but launch the careers of soul legends Jerry Butler and Curtis Mayfield. But far more than that, the Impressions recorded some of the most distinctive vocal-group R&B of the '60s under Mayfield's guidance. Their style was marked by airy, feather-light harmonies and Mayfield's influentially sparse guitar work, plus, at times, understated Latin rhythms. If their sound was sweet...
