Album Review

This four-CD set does a superb job of summing up Bing Crosby's years with Decca. After nine titles from 1931 (which were acquired by Decca later on), the program concentrates on the 1934-1957 period and, in addition to the expected hits, all aspects of his career are covered. Despite a few Dixieland-flavored selections, Crosby had largely abandoned jazz by the late '30s, but his phrasing (which was influenced by Louis Armstrong) and appealing voice should be of interest to jazz listeners. His ballads grew in stature in later years, while the up-tempo performances tended to be less memorable novelties. Although it should be augmented by collections that focus on his recordings of the '20s and early '30s, this is the definitive Bing Crosby set.

Customer Reviews

Truly Classic!

What can you say about this legend that hasn't been said or written about many, many times before? Bing Crosby was THE king of popular music and movies for many years. This wonderful collection from MCA is essential for Crosby collectors. It covers his early years and extends through to some of his later work. You could choose lesser collections, but if you are into Bing, this is a very good set to own.

Best believe it!

I'm 16 yrs, and there's just something about this music that I love. Bing's voice is so smooth and REAL. unlike a lot of singers these days...

Him, Frank Sinatra, and Bob Hope are my favorites from their era.

Bing Crosby was, without doubt, the most popular and influential media star of the first half of the 20th century. The undisputed best-selling artist until well into the rock era (with over half a billion records in circulation), the most popular radio star of all time, and the biggest box-office draw of the 1940s, Crosby dominated the entertainment world from the Depression until the mid-'50s, and proved just as influential as he was popular. Unlike the many vocal artists before him, Crosby grew...
