Album Review

Karen Clark-Sheard was the second gospel powerhouse who found herself without a label home after the implosion of Elektra Records in the mid-2000s (the first one was Yolanda Adams). The singer's free agency ignited a bidding war of sorts in the gospel market; she had, after all, the most prominent solo career of all the Clark Sisters. As if coming full circle, the songstress finally settled with Word Records, the same record label she and her siblings left in the early '90s for greener pastures, just as the group's star was diminishing following Twinkie Clark's decision to launch a ministry of her own. Admittedly, the new Word was no longer experienced in contemporary gospel, but it still had all the intentions of making It's Not Over, Clark-Sheard's fourth solo recording, a smash success in the genre. Recorded at the singer's home church and handled by producers-of-the-moment Israel Houghton and Aaron Lindsey, It's Not Over, on paper at least, had all the makings of a blockbuster. More often than not, it actually sounds like one, especially when it appears as if Clark-Sheard were suddenly fronting Israel & New Breed: the Latinized "Authority" has the supergroup's fingerprints all over it, as does rousing opener "Rejoice and Be Glad," a knockout call to worship like only the Houghton/Lindsey tandem can write. The concert can be motivating, exciting even, yet at the same time so grand and ambitious that, in due time, the cracks begin to show, and the album's colossal arrangements, vocalizations, layers, movements, and whatever else gets piled on top make it sag under its own weight. Even as Clark-Sheard pays homage to her family heritage during a half-reverent, half-churchified medley of worship oldies ("The Lord's Prayer," "Oh the Glory of His Presence"), things are overdone to the point of tiresomeness. Interestingly, the only time the grandiosity works is during the fiery, COGIC (Church of God in Christ)-styled floor stomper "Hallelujah," a handclapper so strong it could grab even the staunchest non-charismatic by the lapels.

Wow! WOW! This is touch-yo'-neighbor-say..-good!

I'm a hugh Moss family critic. I have been for several years. I've been careful to not to run out a grab the latest and greatest-whatever their lineage put on the market. Karen, Twinkie, Dorinda, Jay, Ki-Ki, all-of-'em! They are like a 21st century gospel empire. A Winans-type dynasty if you will. Karen has always had tremendous vocal agility however the song writing for previous recordings, for most part, has been lack-luster, trendy, yet periodic. However, this recording, THIS RECORDING! This recording takes inspirational music to the next level. Finally something new, rewarding & fulfilling. The uptempo songs keeps yo' head bobbin' and your toe tappin'. The ballads are epic start to finish. The song writing and production on this recording is legendary...mark my words down on iPaper. Gurl' you got a hit! a coupla-three of'em, in fact! Keep up the good work.

Great Album - High Price

The album stands as one of the greatest albums of recent memory. I’m glad that she’s using Israel Houghton & Aaron Lindsey as producers. It adds so much when the material has depth as well as punch and power. Unfortunately, this is also one of the highest priced new albums on iTunes. While I will buy the album I won’t sacrifice portability while stomaching the high cost and get mine for less from Wal-Mart without the copy protection. There’s no reason to charge this much for a new release without portability, extras, or even a J-Card. Sorry about the negativity, but I have to be honest.

Karen Make A Grand Comeback After 3 Years

Karen Clark-Sheard is my favorite singers in the world and I aient nothing but a hip-hop and r&b head. When I first heard her song "Nothing Without You feat. Faith Evans" on the radio I thought it was Faith Evans. Then I was shocked to find out it was Karen Clark-Sheard and that the whole time Faith was copying her style. I imeaditely gave Karen all the props because if it was for her and the Clark Sisters there would be no Kelly Price, Faith Evans or Mariah Carey cuz they all use Karen's style of singing. I have all her cd's and It's Not Over is my favorite her voice is so ridiculous. On the songs "Show me Your Glory" and "Favor" she shows her strong vocal abilities and "Be Blessed" shows her R&B/ abilities.

As a member of the Clark Sisters, Karen Clark-Sheard was part of one of the most popular contempoary gospel groups of the '80s and '90s.
