About Felly

A rapper and producer with an eclectic and sunny style, Felly -- real name Christian Felner, and also known as Rob Fel and Felly the Kid -- was born in 1996 in Trumbull, Connecticut. Felner grew up listening to reggae and hip-hop, and became a serious Bob Marley fan. Felner was fascinated with the use of sampling, and as he developed a taste for jazz and vintage soul, he focused on how elements of songs could be used to construct new tracks. In his early teens, Felner and his friends were writing songs, and when they won a contest with a YouTube video of a parody tune, "Condoms," netting the youngsters a video game console and $100 each, he realized he could turn his creativity into a career. By the time he was 15, Felly was already recording tunes and posting his work online, and he released his first mixtape, Drive-By Music, in August 2011. Felly was also dipping his toes into production and making beats for other rappers, releasing a collection titled Beats for Sale, Vol. 1 on Christmas Eve 2011, with several more volumes following. His first album, Waking Up to Sirens, was released in 2014, and Felly experienced a critical and commercial breakthrough with 2015's This Shit Comes in Waves. By this time, Felly was a student at the University of Southern California and he had established 2273 Records, named for the address of the house where he lived in California and collaborated with like-minded students. In July 2016, Felly released the album Young Fel, which broke him onto the mainstream charts, rising to number 21 on the R&B albums listing. ~ Mark Deming
