iTunes Editors’ Notes

On his solo debut 12 Play, R. Kelly reinvented the bedroom play of Marvin Gaye and Ronald Isley for the unsubtle ‘90s. Kelly turned the foreplay of “Let’s Get It On” into the “twelve-play” of “Sex Me,” and he turned the soft-touch romp of “Between the Sheets” into the suggestive throb of “Bump N’ Grind.” Yet, while some criticized Kelly for being too explicit, his jams are no less seductive than those of his predecessors. While the rap/R&B hybrid cuts “Freak Dat Body” and “Back to the Hood of Things” have long since become dated oddities, “Your Body’s Calling” and “It Seems Like You're Ready” are timeless. The deliquescent, intoxicating grooves on these songs have held up, and continue to inspire imitations. Kelly’s unapologetically lewd lyrics gave a much-needed shake to modern R&B, which had become victim to hordes of Luther Vandross wannabes. At the time, Kelly’s persona seemed like a gimmick that wouldn’t last, but as “Bump N’ Grind,” “Sex Me,” and “Your Body’s Calling” grew, and the hip-hop world embraced him as one of its own, Kelly proved that the formula he debuted on 12 Play wasn’t a flash in the pan, but an introduction to a whole new strain of R&B style.

My mother use to hide the tape from me. I had no idea what 12play was referring too. The overall cd is very good too. 90's music was the best!!

R&B producer/vocalist/multi-instrumentalist/songwriter R. Kelly and his supporting band Public Announcement began recording in 1992 at the tail-end of the new jack swing era, yet he was able to keep much of its sound alive while remaining commercially successful. While he created a smooth, professional mixture of hip-hop beats, soulman crooning, and funk, the most distinctive element of Kelly's music is its explicit carnality. He was able to make songs like "Sex Me," "Bump n' Grind," "Your Body's...
