Great Album

I wish this album was more well-known, it's fantastic. It reminds me of The Shins and has an overall pleasant sound to it. Definitely worth-buying.

Singer-Songwriter Psychedelia

This album never sounds better than it does in the trimmed-down song previews. Virtually every number wears out its welcome before the final chords. The music is upbeat, but the instrumentation is so unvaried that, with each new song, you’ll wonder whether you didn’t just hear this song.

The real weakness is in the lyrics. Combined with the simple instrumentation (strum, strum, strum, while I shake this tambourine), lines like “chocolate covered cherries / scary, scary berries” and “‘neath the mirrored minotaur / he likes to be petted” harken back to the solo albums of Syd Barrett.

A poetry teacher of mine once told the class that a poet who doesn’t give in to rhyme is free to say exactly what they want to say. The lyrics here don’t often rhyme exactly, but they’re nevertheless so much vocabularic chewing and spitting up, a kind of un-pretty word association that grates.

This album challenges you to hang on through each song.
