Album Review

Stiffed sounds like a band that's been burned so many times it's given up on trying to impress anybody, even on the eve of its debut full-length. That, though, is mostly to its credit. Dip into Burned Again and you find lead singer Santi White — a vocal ringer for both Gwen Stefani and Dale Bozzio from the '80s band Missing Persons — strutting her dub-flavored stuff over a grab-bag of fizzed-up punk ("Soon Enough"), snarky pop ("A Day with Andrew"), and blender-smooth rocksteady ("Your Voice"). Produced by Darryl Jenifer of Bad Brains — a big influence on the band alongside the Clash — Burned Again comes across as keep-it-coming, lumps-and-all party music. In a pop playing field littered with geniuses and would-be masterpiece-makers, Stiffed are the genial lollygaggers. Love them for it.

Customer Reviews

Check out this band.... or else

I've been listing to this band since Ow! Ow! (It's Unanimous) was on the snowboard video "POP". The have a new style with an old school flair! Give them a listen and you won't be dissapointed. If you like a little bit of punk but with a chick that has a sexxxxy voice then you found it. I Dig this!!!

Shades of Bad Brains, Missing Persons, Blondie and The Only Band That Matters

Blown away by this album. I picked up Santogold after reading the review in NME and love it, Santi White has a range that I've never come across...hell she mimes Siouxsie Sioux on "My Superman" and Crissy Hynde on "I'm a Lady". Loving that album, I sought more, found out about Stiffed...stellar, she channels H.R. on "What it's Like" and on other tracks Gwen Stefani, Dale Bozzio, Debbie Harry, Res (whom she wrote for and produced, I believe) are all evoked. This is a definite must buy for any fans of East Coast Punk, Santogold, Dischord and good music in general. Though 3 years old it is my Album of the Year 2008.

AMAZING AMAZING AMAZING

BUY BUY BUY...and listen before you go into the city. You will def. feel cool!

Biography

Formed: 2001 in Philadelphia, PA

Genre: Alternative

Years Active: '00s

Hailing from Philadelphia, Stiffed mixes a stylishly cool mix of no wave and new wave. The honeyed vocal scratch of Santi White has fronted this fabulous four-piece since 2001, however the name Stiffed has been a permanent word in her vocabulary since her early 20s. Figuratively, White feels stiffed when it comes to bad relationships, lackluster jobs, and the lack of booty in her life. Having a band was her way in spoofing on those typical issues. Joining her is drummer Chuck Treece and ex-Lottery...
