Fresh Freshmen

Dick Reynolds added some superb arrangements to the popular 1958 Four Freshmen collection of romantic tunes.

What I like most about this set is the absense of the wonderful brass and reeds usually accompianing the quartet. Here you have a grand collection of mood songs, and it is easy on the ears. The jazz oriented sound gives way to classic mood music." I Am Always Chasing Rainbows" starts the whole mood off right. The Freshmen voices never sounded more in sync or richer. "There Is No Greater Love" follows with a great solo by Albers, and you cannot help but love Reynolds' arrangement of "Moonlight" again with the rich horn of Albers.

My favorite is "Out Of Nowhere" and it seems to me they were in a first take mode, even with Albers' 'bone solo. This rare cd is a gem, and worth listening to, for its unique strings only quality. Superbly re-mastered. Capitol records.
