Album Review

Beth Thornley's third album has buoyant, eclectic pop/rock songs that don't have all that much in common with each other besides the presence of her slightly breathy, eager-sounding vocals. The opening title track is typical in its combination of elements that sound disparate on paper but work well enough in practice, as beat-heavy almost hipster-rapping verses alternate with bittersweet choruses, jovial jazzy brass band riffs occasionally entering for punctuation. Also coming into play are catchy melodies on the order of 1970s Paul McCartney or ELO (on "Still Can't Hide"), a hint of the ironic bounciness of composers like Randy Newman ("A to Z"), and a frequent mix of a confessional singer/songwriter sensibility with a more urgent pop drive than most such artists are wont to employ. There are occasional more sedate moods with introspective musings in a ballad-like form, such as "What the Heart Wants." Like many singer/songwriters, her concerns are romantic uncertainties and vulnerabilities, but expressed here in language fresher than the norm, if fairly allusively vague at many points.

Awesome!

I know you're going to love this like I do. Buy the entire CD and follow the same directions they give you for shampoo. Play, rinse, repeat... Can someone please hand me a towel?

Just Keeps Getting Better!

Beth's self-titled first album was a breath of fresh air when she released it in 2002. Her second album, "My Glass Eye", appeared in 2006 and showed her growth and maturity as a singer/songwriter; an album that somehow improved on a fantastic first effort. Now, with her third album, "Wash U Clean", Beth has easily hit three consecutive home runs. Her writing and vocals remain amazing--this album is fantastic and true to her sound and style. Beth's songs never fail to keep us somewhere between a quiet coffee house and a large venue concert: heartfelt, strong, and at times edgy. What started as a breath of fresh air eight years ago has proven to be a wonderfully constant breeze that keeps on refreshing! This album, like the first two, definitely floats at the top of my "most played" list. Give it a listen; I think you'll love it!

Beth Thornley's Wash U Clean

Ok, so it's no wonder that Beth gets high bars on the Popularity rating for her up-tempo rockin' songs like A to Z, Wash U Clean, You're So Pony etc. 'cause she nails those numbers! But let's not overlook her lyricism and introspective ballads like Everyone Falls and What the Heart Wants. This gal is a SERIOUSLY evolving singer/songwriter and this CD is her best to date without a doubt! The arrangements are indie-quirky, Beatle-y sophisticated and still hook u. Cannot wait for what comes next from this truly inspired artist!

The Alabama-born Thornley, who earned a classical music degree, landed in Los Angeles in the late '90s with her sights set on making her rock & roll dreams come true. In between various music jobs, Thornley recorded her first album, a self-titled effort that was issued on her own Stiff Hips imprint in 2002. "I Will Lie" was chosen as...
