Almost completely essential

If you don't want to pay for another copy of Our Favourite Shop, but you want the tracks that are included in the Deluxe Edition, this collection is for you. It's an essential compilation of b-sides from the 12-month period in which the album was originally released—including the long-unavailable Council Collective one-off "Soul Deep", and the live tracks from the b-side of "The Lodgers" 12-inch.

Beware, however—the so-called "USA remix" of "Shout to the Top" only became available with the 2000 CD reissue. I had the Geffen LP "Internationalists", and the version appearing on that LP was the same as the one that showed up on the original UK "Our Favourite Shop" CD.

Guitarist/vocalist Paul Weller broke up the Jam, the most popular British band of the early '80s, at the height of their success in 1982 because he was dissatisfied with their musical direction. Weller wanted to incorporate more elements of soul, R&B, and jazz into his songwriting, which is something he felt his punk-oriented bandmates were incapable of performing.
