Editors’ Notes

Late-‘80s and -‘90s indie and alternative rock acts ranging from Smashing Pumpkins to Pavement to Dinosaur Jr. are among the many touchstones of this British quintet. Granted, the members were still in diapers when those bands were in their heydays, so it’s interesting to hear how they absorb that time and sound into their own marriage of squalling shoegazer pop and jangly post-punk. “Get Away,” “Holing Out,” “The Wall,” and “Operation” represent the loud side of the band as distorted vocals, fuzzy guitars, and a wide variety of effects pedals are cranked into the red. These noisy numbers are balanced by “Stutter,” a gauzy, reverb-laden ballad, and melodic and melancholy mid-tempo tracks like “Shook Down,” “Suck,” “Sunday,” and “Suicide Policeman,” the latter featuring sweet harmony vocals by guitarist Daniel Blumberg and his sister Ilana. The album closes on an intriguing note with the hypnotic seven-minute feedback drone of “Rubber.” A fun, self-assured debut by a young band that knows how to channel their musical influences while honing their own sound.

Customer Reviews

You gotta love it. Getting old means watching your music "come back." And nobody ever sees it coming. We're not that old, we think to ourselves... This is an absolutely excellent album of music that sounds like these kids got into their parents early 90's record collection- and found it enthralling. They are trying on little bits of Yo La Tengo, Pavement, Built to Spill, and Dinosaur- without ever sounding derivative or unoriginal. It's that old green leather jacket, hanging perfectly on your kid's shoulders- looking as good on him as it ever did on you. Good stuff, then and now!

Like Built to Spill!? You will dig Yuck! Great Music for anyone to check out!

Having seemingly been blessed with the Midas touch in terms of being at the center of mass music press hype, by the end of 2010 — and before the age of 20 — Daniel Blumberg (guitar/vocals) and Max Bloom (guitar/vocals) found themselves in their second project that had achieved just that. The London-born longtime friends were once melting teenage girls' hearts with the indie pop of Cajun Dance Party (in which Bloom played bass). But having received rave reviews for their XL Recordings...
