Reseña de álbum

Though it's a bit less intentionally noisy than previous Neubaten material, ½ Mensch is, in a way, the group's masterpiece. The inspired use of such "traditional" instruments as a grand piano alongside the band's characteristic blazing percussion make for a record similar more to their compositional influences like Stockhausen than their nearest contemporaries, Throbbing Gristle or Cabaret Voltaire. The record that showed Einstürzende Neubaten could rise above the concept of noise for its own sake to reach another level of noise-oriented post-punk music, ½ Mensch is an excellent feat of industrial music.

Greatest Neubauten Album

The freightening, yet beautiful choir in the opening track contrasts with the sharp, abrasive rhythm oif ZNS, followed later on by "Der Tod ist Ein Dandy", the noise barely drowning out the lyrics screeched torturously by Bargeld. Finished by "Sand", a track that flutters and flickers like a campfire, and gives almost enough warmth to this cold album.

This album

This album is great. I love sand. If you like the version by Nancy Sinatra. You will, I hope, like this version.

Industrial Masterpiece

I saw the band tour on this album in Seattle in '85. I still own my original vinyl copy which is mint condition. The raw creativity of this masterpiece is something sorely lacking in contemporary music culture. Beautiful and frightening — the band walked onto the makeshift stage set out in the park and set huge drums of gasoline afire. Standing too close to the stage you felt your skin burn. There is majesty in the rebirth from intentional destruction.

Along with Cabaret Voltaire and Throbbing Gristle, Germany's Einstürzende Neubauten ("collapsing new buildings") helped pioneer industrial music with an avant-garde mix of white-noise guitar drones, vocals verging on the unlistenable at times, and a clanging, rhythmic din produced by a percussion section consisting of construction materials, power tools, and various metal objects. Einstürzende Neubauten were founded by vocalist/guitarist Blixa Bargeld and percussionist/American expatriate N.U. Unruh...
