Album Review

The Schiller duo of Mirko von Schlieffen and Christopher von Deylen do a fair job dabbling in the hypnotic organica style of Enigma. When the beats are dropped (on "Liebesschmerz" or "Lover's Pain," for instance), the duo manages to pull off a less dramatic approximation of Bedrock's "Heaven Scent." Most of the tracks here are passably produced and logically thought through.

I first discovered Sciller while traveling in Germany in 2000. I caught their video "Ein Schoner Tag" (A Beautiful Day) and I was mezmerized. I quickly came home and grabbed everything of theirs I could.... which was not easy. Happily more and more of their musicis available in the U.S. Their music is trance at its best. Schiller can "speed it up" and have you dancing into the night; then bring you down with some beautiful melodies that will make your mind soar. Zeitgeist is typical Schiller, with more upbeat melodies such as "Love Parade" and "Glockenspeil" while "Love and Happiness" is as good a love song as you will hear. Schiller is not as big in the U.S. as they are in Europe, especially Germany, however their beats are both strong and beautiful at the same time; and should be appreciated anywhere.

Aside from the Schiller project, both von Schlieffen and von Deylen have worked on outside projects. Zeitgeist marked the band's debut in 1999 (the album was not released in the United States until 2001). The...
