Classic post-bop energy is the key motivating influence driving this drummer’s briskly engaging 2016 album. In the company of bass, drums, and a saxophonist who splits tenor and soprano duties, Sinnett starts out in uptempo territory on “Double Dribble” before experimenting with gentler, more pastoral moods like those of “Quail Creek.” Regardless of instrumental attack, Sinnett’s program of originals (plus the standard "Never Let Me Go") provides plenty of singable melodies—another element of the postwar swing playbook that he has usefully, and tunefully, absorbed.
