Album Review

Inspired by World War Z, Pride and Prejudice and Zombies, and The Zombie Survival Guide, the Devil Wears Prada's 2010 Zombie EP is a loose concept about — you guessed it — zombies. The theme makes for a break from the screamo norm and finds the band in a rare light: having fun with a pet project. However, since a full album of songs about brutalizing the undead might be a tad wearing, singer Mike Hranica wisely chose to keep the running time short, with five songs under the five-minute mark. Keeping in line with the DWP discography, the band continues to progress further into metalcore territory, and this works exceptionally well, considering the setting (“In a sea of stinking rot — in a place where living humans are no longer the hunters”). Howls and growls perfectly fit with the plotline about blowing clumsy beasts to bits. For “Revive,” Hranca takes on the role of a gruff drill sargeant, insisting that “the cure is a shotgun,” while second vocalist Jeremy DePoyster sings narrative cleanly from the background, to observe that “All is lost in the flood of the living dead.” The Devil Wears Prada's usual sugary-to-brutal template is boosted by Zombie’s thick production, which includes computer-glitched thrash riffs, a symphonic action/horror score, and fake radio broadcasts. Everything adds up nicely to make for an entertaining, fear-provoking listen. [Limited copies include a comic book that illustrates the action.]

Zombies Rule!

If any of the countless metal bands was going to do an album just about zombies I'm glad it was this one. I have to be honest, I was never a fan of The Devil Wears Prada until now. Zombie definitely tops all their albums; this is zombies done right! The lyrics are what really grabbed my attention....and if a zombie apocalypse ever actually happened, this is what I'd listen to.

I'm not sure this is really a concept album to TDWP. I think these lyrics refer directly to things that American (specifcally) society has become today. This is the greatest 5 songs I've ever seen lyrically. I don't think it will be beat for a long time either. If you sit and read them you can almost literally apply them to everything in life. There is a bigger message underneath what TDWP does with their music. And I just loved that back of the booklet, where most people put a thanks section, they did decided not to. Instead, it says "All Glory To God" in super big letters. Gotta love it. These guys are amazing musicians/people with a HUGE vision. I realize I'm just a Christian announcing my belief on here, but look at this vision. If you do anything with these 5 songs, Look at the Vision. What if we turned it upside down?

This is THE best music they have created, hands down. I know we can all agree on that. Stay (SIC) my friends!

I love TDWP
