Album Review

In 1991, as the Iron Curtain came down, two Americans (pianist Louis Scherr and drummer Tony Martucci) joined with a pair of Russians (saxophonist Sergei Gurbeloshvili and bassist Victor Dvoskin) to form Jazznost. The group was short-lived and Joint Venture is the only CD that resulted from its existence. For this set, the quartet performs eight group originals, including an abstract version of "Hail to the Chief." Gurbeloshvili is quite impressive on both soprano and tenor so it is strange that he never became well known. The same can be said for the fluent pianist Scherr, who combines his classical training with a strong improvising style. Their music (four of the songs are by Dvoskin) swings hard and is pretty modern for the time period, avoiding being predictable. This obscure set is well worth searching for.
