Hearthstone Update – March 14 – Rise of Shadows Pre-Purchase

In this update we draw up the plans for Rise of Shadows and give you a chance to join the crew before the heist begins. We’re also saying goodbye to the Year of the Mammoth card sets in style, adding some cool quality of life improvements, and fixing some bugs.

Read on for details!

Pre-Purchase the Rise of Shadows – Be ready when Rise of Shadows, Hearthstone’s newest expansion, begins!
* Rise of Shadows Bundle - Get 50 Rise of Shadows card packs, the Jewel of Lazul card back, and a Legendary minion from Rise of Shadows.
* Rise of Shadows Mega Bundle - Get 80 Rise of Shadows card packs, the Jewel of Lazul card back, a golden Legendary minion, and the new Priest Hero Madame Lazul!

Farewell to Mammoth!
With the Year of the Dragon swiftly approaching let's take a moment to remember and celebrate the Year of the Mammoth which will soon be rotating to Wild.

Join us for a Mammoth send-off:
* Free Packs – Log in March 25th through April 2 to receive 3 free card packs! (1 each from Journey to Un’Goro, The Knights of the Frozen Throne, and Kobolds & Catacombs)
* Brawl Block: Year of the Mammoth – The Tavern Brawl starting March 25 invites you to take those free cards and build decks using only expansions from the Year of the Mammoth.
* Shadows Rise in the Tavern! - The Tavern Brawl starting April 1 gives you an opportunity to earn a Rise of Shadows pack that you can open once the expansion is released.

We’ve further optimized Hearthstone's app size! It will be necessary to re-download app data, but Hearthstone will take up a lot less space now!

Random Card Back Selector – Let the Innkeeper curate your card back collection. Select the Random card back for a deck, and a random card back from your Collection will be chosen each time you play.

Complete My Deck – Hearthstone’s better at helping you build decks than ever before.
* Helps you build established, proven decks using your collection.
* If you’re short of an established deck, the helper will help you choose strong, stand-alone cards from what you have available.

Trigger Rules Update - We're updating the rules regarding how Poisonous, Lifesteal, and Overkill keywords work in specific cases, to make cards behave in a more intuitive way.

Blizzard’s first iOS game takes the form of a wonderfully robust card battler. Hearthstone's gameplay strikes an enchanting balance—it's easy enough for anyone to pick up in short sessions, yet deep enough to keep the experience feeling fresh. Whether you're practicing against the computer or creating your own intricate deck of minions, Hearthstone gleams with the polish of premier development.

Haters gonna Hate

Hearthstone is an incredible game. The depth of gameplay is tremendous for a free-to-play. I’m not exactly sure what people expect to get for FREE. The amount of content that is available at absolutely no cost makes HS a compelling part of my daily routine (don’t want to miss the FREE gold for completing the daily quest. Let me try an analogy: I can go outside with a friend and play baseball for free, just pick up a stick and a small rock and we’re in business. If we had a bat and a ball and maybe a glove or two it would still be fun (maybe more fun) but we definitely would be better at it. Is the sporting goods store supposed to GIVE me the bat, ball, and gloves for nothing? Or will I have to buy them...

And regarding skill level, a professional baseball player would whoop up on me playing with a stick and a rock; same equipment, different skill level. Same thing applies to HS. Thankfully, the ranking system mitigates this a bit. I play it because it’s fun and I spend a little money because that makes it more fun. For me.

I admit I pre-order every expansion. It’s a good price for the number of cards/dust you get. And relative to other forms or entertainment ($15 for a movie, $60 ($90 with DLC) for a video game) I really get my money’s worth. I’m actually tempted to calculate the per hour entertainment value of all of my options but it would cut into my HS (and Fallout) time!

Superbly polished game

Blizzard has built a beautiful game, the production value is abnormally high for a mobile game. The game has good mechanics, and a reasonable approach to “free to play” IMHO. The paywall basically boils down to: you need to choose your engagement/investment level. If you want to play for free and slowly build your collection, you can do that... but, you probably won’t be playing any super competitive decks with all the power cards for at least your first year, and will always make come budget compromises. If you want to fast-track into highly competitive play and run all the best cards, there is always $$$. Blizzard actually improved the F2P experience in a recent update by raising the baseline gold offered by all daily quests while also lowering their completion requirements. It’s now easier and more rewarding to complete daily quests. Personally, I take a mixed approach and set a budget of what I’m willing to spend on the game in a year and buy cards selectively at new set releases, then otherwise just operate using quest gold. Pick how you want to play, just please don’t complain about the paywall. There are no “surprises”: you choose when and how much money you want to spend. If you want all the best cards, don’t want to save for them and don’t want to pay for them, then this probably isn’t the game for you.
