Description

Raise a glass to the century-old bars of New York City.

New York has countless bars, pubs, saloons, taverns, taprooms, alehouses, and watering holes — a vast range of establishments dedicated to facilitating the wetting of one's whistle. This app focuses on the select few that have been serving drinks for more than 100 years. Most of them remained open as speakeasies straight through Prohibition. Some, like the Old Town, P.J. Clarke's, and Fanelli's, are classic, old-style New York saloons, while some, like the Bohemian Hall beer garden in Astoria, Queens, are unlike any place else in the city. Some, like the Oak Bar at the Plaza Hotel, are the height of sophistication. Others, like the Mulberry Street Bar, where Frank Sinatra used to decompress after performances, are good old dive bars. There’s a reason these terrific old spots have lasted so long. Each is undeniably wonderful in its own way, with a unique character and lustrous patina that cannot be faked.

The app's creators, Ellen Williams and Steve Radlauer, are the authors of The Historic Shops & Restaurants of New York as well as other books and Touchscreen Tours™ that bring cities alive for travelers and natives alike. In this app you’ll discover 28 New York bars that have been around for a century or more. Each is illustrated with a terrific photograph that flips to reveal a lively description. You can call a bar or visit its website with handy one-touch buttons.

To find a bar’s location, just tap the Map button; tap again and the iPhone’s built-in GPS will show you how to get there from your current location — on foot, by car, or by public transportation. It will take you from the Landmark Tavern (1868) which, in the days before landfill, stood on the corner of 46th Street and the Hudson River, down to the Bridge Café (1794) on Water Street in the shadow of the Brooklyn Bridge. Or from P.J. Clarke’s (1890), with the most extraordinary men’s room in town, to Teddy’s (1887), above which the notorious Mae West was born. And you can keep track of the places you like best with the Favorites button, for future visits or your own 19th-century-pubs album.

This app will guide you and your friends to some of the most authentic relics of the gas-lit New York of Stanford White, Diamond Jim Brady, Boss Tweed, and Walt Whitman — places where generations before you have hoisted a tankard, painted the town red, proposed a toast, or nursed their sorrows. Use the app to expand your sense of New York history, or to organize an evening unlike any other. Whether you're planning a trip or you live and work in New York, this app is an invaluable guide to some of the city's rarest treasures.

Have fun getting to know New York better — with the 19th-Century NYC Pub Crawl Touchscreen Tour.
