Great product, but not happy about the subscription

I don’t mind buying software again and again if it is something I use. I do use 1Password and do wish to support the fantastic efforts and yet I despise the subscription model. I feel it works for businesses who utilize certain software to do their business on a regular basis. They can write such things off. But for the average user who might do a few things with some software now and again subscriptions will gradually creep up and expand to consume ones personal income. And the value is somewhat less.

I believe that this developer is exceptional. I love the software. I want to support the developer with money. I just don’t wish to be locked into a subscription. Therefore I think I will stick with version 6 for now and hope that a 1 time purchase becomes available at some point.

Another piece of software I use even more frequently was just upgraded from version 2 to 3 and when that happened they charged for the new version. I bought it because it is worth it. I would buy 1Password 7 too, but there is not such an option. I am disappointed although the developer certainly needs to seek a revenue stream, I feel this approach leaves me out a bit in my own personal view.

Hi bUzzbOmbAstIc, and thank you so much for writing this review! I just wanted to point out that you can still purchase 1Password 7, although the Membership has definitely more features and is more appealing to most users. Thank you again! Daniel, AgileBits

A nice update

I’ve just installed and updated to 1Password 7. It’s a solid update with nice interface enhancements. I was thrilled to see the addition of the Watchtower function that alerts me to potentially compromised, outdated, and duplicate passwords — a real plus. Even better, 1Password’s Watchtower can also display which websites offer Two Factor Authentication, which I use wherever I can. Seeing where I can add this to other websites and accounts is very important. Kudos, guys!

A feature request I had hoped would make this new update but didn’t was an expansion of categories under which you can organize my passwords, IDs, Serial Numbers, Notes, and other information. This is common in some competing applications, and a couple of competitors also allow users to create custom categories. While 1Password allows for a wide range of tags, something I also use quite a bit, expanding the variety of Categories would be a real help. I know that software developers can’t fit in every request on a major update, but I hope this will be a priority in the future.

Still, 1Password is my favorite application of its kind. And believe me, I have tried many of them, often with disastrous results. Well done, guys.

Thank you so much for the review groupeone! Custom categories are currently being beta tested, so we are definitely thinking about it ;) Daniel, AgileBits

I think the core program of 1password is fantastic. Unfortunately I think the move to 1password 7 is a step back. Because of work and personal use I use 1password for and LastPass as my password managers. I’ve been using 1P since version 5 and LP a bit longer. Back then I felt 1password was stronger but with their upgrade subscription pricing and the new 1p 7 format (along with the great advancements with LP) I’m unfortunately leaving 1P for LastPass.
LastPass is incredibly solid and doesn’t all of the core features as good, adds a few bells and missings some whistles that 1P has.
I do understand that 7 is fresh and the team at Agilebits will definitely approve upon it (esp given the hard negative feedback). Usually I would stick with them for that reason but the pricing model is just not worth and LP is just as good at substantially less. (I believe the developer should get paid for their efforts but the subscription model offered is just a bit rich IMO :). If you want to move LastPass even has an import tool for 1password and its a really solid alternative and the only one I would recommend.
My recommendation, is if you are commited to 1P and don’t mind the subscription fee’s, then stay on 6 until things smooth out as i’m sure it will. 1P is still a solid program and the developers are a great team.

Hi AlchemicKnowledge. I’m sorry to hear that. We do still have licensing available, but for most customers feel that membership is going to provide the best experience. That said, if LastPass meets your needs for less of an investment I’d rather see you use them than no password manager at all. :) If you’d like to discuss further please reach out to our team at Thanks!
