What's New

Version 7.2.1

Happy macOS Mojave week, everyone! We are incredibly excited about today’s update for a number of reasons, not the least of which are Dark Mode and our brand new Safari App Extension. Let’s dive in!

## TL;DR

• 1Password has embraced its inner darkness and looks _gorgeous_ on macOS Mojave in Dark Mode.
• Using 1Password in Safari has never been easier than with our brand new Safari App Extension, built right in.
• Advanced security with full support for the new hardened runtime.

## Everything’s better in the dark

macOS Mojave includes a gorgeous way to use your Mac with a new feature called Dark Mode. After enabling it in the General pane of System Preferences, you are ushered into a whole new world. Ever since this feature was announced in June, we’ve been working hard to make sure every pixel of 1Password is perfectly at home in the dark.

## Let’s go on a Safari

Starting today 1Password has built-in support for the Safari web browser, meaning you’ll never again have to install a separate browser extension to fill your passwords, credit cards, and personal information while browsing the web.

## More secure than ever before

Starting with macOS Mojave, a whole new set of security protections became available and we’re happy to say that 1Password has opted into _all of them_. 1Password now executes within a hardened runtime, meaning it’s protected against modification by other processes on your computer. It has also been notarized by Apple’s new notary service, which means it has been verified as being free of malware and other runtime vulnerabilities. All of this adds up to create a better, safer 1Password experience.

## Much, much more

Great product, but not happy about the subscription

I don’t mind buying software again and again if it is something I use. I do use 1Password and do wish to support the fantastic efforts and yet I despise the subscription model. I feel it works for businesses who utilize certain software to do their business on a regular basis. They can write such things off. But for the average user who might do a few things with some software now and again subscriptions will gradually creep up and expand to consume ones personal income. And the value is somewhat less.

I believe that this developer is exceptional. I love the software. I want to support the developer with money. I just don’t wish to be locked into a subscription. Therefore I think I will stick with version 6 for now and hope that a 1 time purchase becomes available at some point.

Another piece of software I use even more frequently was just upgraded from version 2 to 3 and when that happened they charged for the new version. I bought it because it is worth it. I would buy 1Password 7 too, but there is not such an option. I am disappointed although the developer certainly needs to seek a revenue stream, I feel this approach leaves me out a bit in my own personal view.

Hi bUzzbOmbAstIc, and thank you so much for writing this review! I just wanted to point out that you can still purchase 1Password 7, although the Membership has definitely more features and is more appealing to most users. Thank you again! Daniel, AgileBits

Broken updating plus microtransactions. X-P

I’ve been a 1password user for many years; and it was one of the most useful software purchases I’ve ever made; Mac or iOS. In fact, it’s been chuggling along so well for so long, I didn’t even notice that things were broken until I started a new job. The new company uses 1p and provided it to my on my work MacBook. Only then did I see a new UI and realize that it has not been updating for I-don’t-know-how-long. I've checked all of my Macs; and autoupdate for 1password is broken on all of them…

… intentionally, it seems. I tried a manual delete & re-download. And lo-and-behold, I’m being prompted to consign myself to a microtransactions hell. The app is totally non-functional; with my passwords held hostage, until I consent to treating 1p like the worst of iOS shovelware, a la clash of clans and other such garbage. I’m not at all opposed to paying a fair price for software. In fact, I’ve already done exactly that for 1p. But I’m not going to be nickel-and-dimed to death.

Fortunately, I have backups of everything. I learned that lesson long ago; and even my backups have backups. So, though it will be obnoxious to have to do so, I can recover this laptop to functionality. But it’s going to be annoying to have to export, choose, switch, and import my data into a new password manager. And it is infuriating to be treated like this by what I once considered a premier Mac & iOS developer.

Developer Response

Hello jdta, I'm so sorry this was your experience. I do believe there is a fair amount of confusion here that I'd love to clear up. 1Password has never broken anything intentionally, nor would we (or can we) hold your data hostage—a 1Password membership is not required to use the app. Can I bother you to reach out to us so I can help? Please send an email to when you have a moment. I'll look forward to hearing from you.
Megan, 1Password

A nice update

I’ve just installed and updated to 1Password 7. It’s a solid update with nice interface enhancements. I was thrilled to see the addition of the Watchtower function that alerts me to potentially compromised, outdated, and duplicate passwords — a real plus. Even better, 1Password’s Watchtower can also display which websites offer Two Factor Authentication, which I use wherever I can. Seeing where I can add this to other websites and accounts is very important. Kudos, guys!

A feature request I had hoped would make this new update but didn’t was an expansion of categories under which you can organize my passwords, IDs, Serial Numbers, Notes, and other information. This is common in some competing applications, and a couple of competitors also allow users to create custom categories. While 1Password allows for a wide range of tags, something I also use quite a bit, expanding the variety of Categories would be a real help. I know that software developers can’t fit in every request on a major update, but I hope this will be a priority in the future.

Still, 1Password is my favorite application of its kind. And believe me, I have tried many of them, often with disastrous results. Well done, guys.

Developer Response

Thank you so much for the review groupeone! Custom categories are currently being beta tested, so we are definitely thinking about it ;) Daniel, AgileBits
