My favorite app, though I’m not interested in subscription model

This is the most useful app in my software collection. It stores more than just passwords, and if you get the iOS app, it can sync across all of your devices. I like its simple, customizable interface, allowing me to add fields to individual entries easily. They have since added team and family features that, while I don’t need, expand its functionality. Finally, your app and database are local, and you choose how it’s synced, so no risk of a web hack cracking your account.
One of their greatest features, though, used to be not requiring a subscription to use. Unfortunately, they have now joined the other password storage services in now pushing a subscription model. They may still offer a one time standalone purchase option, but they don’t make it easy to find, is nearly double the price it used to be and may hve limitations. I understand needing recurring revenue to pay for SaaS services, but if I do my own cloud storage via Dropbox or iCloud, I don’t want to have to pay for theirs. I’m an old computer user, and I do not like the trend towards software subscriptions and season passes.
Still, given its ability to store such varied information and have it on all my devices without having to go through a web interface, I think 1Password is the best product of its kind.

I thought using a password manager would be scary

Honestly I was apprehensive about using a password manager because, despite what I heard about how they make my passwords much more secure, I thought that they would impede my daily flow by forcing my to constantly use the app to look up my saved passwords. The benefits didn’t seem worth it. After all, I have never had my data compromised.

1Password proved me wrong. Along with exceptional customer service that helped me set up my account when I ran into issues, I find using the app a breeze. On desktop, I am able to easily use the Chrome plugin and keyboard shortcut to fill in passwords EVEN FASTER than if I were typing them out myself each time. On mobile, which is where I thought the real issue would be, I am only slowed slightly by having to open the app, but am able to quickly access my passwords using the fingerprint scanner. The recent addition of Recently Used passwords in combination with my favorites has also significantly cut down on time. Also, being able to store my credit card and identity information and quickly fill in forms was a delightful bonus.

Overall, 1Password has made it effortless to be more responsible and secure with my information and logins. 1Password has proven that there really is no excuse not to invest in a good password manager.

Would like to see updates to match advancing technology.

This app is definitely great in achieving its core mission — keeping your important passwords and account information secure in one place and easily accessible from seemingly endless platforms.

However, something that I would like to see in a future update would be more timely updates to keep up with technological advances occurring in phones/tablets/computers. In particular, I am not sure why there has not been an update to the desk top app for MacBook that would allow for sign-in using the fingerprint ID scanner. Fingerprint login for 1Password has been possible on my iPhone for a couple years now (I believe), and it is mildly annoying that the desktop version of the same app has not been updated to do the same after this much time. Granted, the fingerprint ID has not been available on the MacBook until this past year — but it has been out long enough that I would have hoped to see an update to 1Password by now.

Admittedly, my annoyance with this is fairly petty because as I first mentioned, the app does absolutely everything one could hope for in using it. But it would definitely be nice to see the desktop version of 1Password keep up with the mobile versions — especially since the desktop versions are a much more significant purchase than the mobile app.

Developer Response

Hey there PookieNinja, thanks so much for the kind words and for taking the time to leave us a review. It would appear that we have not done nearly a good enough job tooting our own horn as we should have. One of the things that we pride ourselves on with 1Password is our adoption of the latest and greatest technologies that Apple has to offer. You mentioned our excellent track record of this on iOS, but the same holds true on the Mac as well. When Apple released the new MacBook Pro with Touch Bar and Touch ID back in November of 2016 we were there on day one with an update to 1Password that supported both the Touch Bar and Touch ID.

To enable Touch ID for 1Password, just open and unlock 1Password, bring up the Preferences window from the 1Password menu in the menu bar, click on the Security tab, and look for the Touch ID section.

I hope this helps, but if there's anything else I can do please don't hesitate to email me at
