Must-have app

Look, I know that remembering many different passwords is difficult. In this day and age everyone wants your attention and it usually involves a login and password. So the easiest solution to this problem is to use very few passwords - maybe only one. Easy to remember and, hey, it’s a password so it’s secure, right? I’ll bet the Equifax breach was not via a login/password interface.

If you’re going to use one password for your logins be smart - use use it with 1Password. 1Password is a password manager and, as its name implies, it helps you to collect, categorize, use and manage your jillions of passwords. I’m no password manager expert but I’ve used two competitors and 1Password is, by far, the more robust and better maintained. Having used 1Password for nearly ten years, I can say that the product support and feature updates are first-class. AgileBits is great and they produce a great product.

I repeat, if you’re going to use just one password, use it with 1Password.

A solid password database

I’m a fan of being under control of my passwords even if they’re in encrypted files. 1Password gives me the option of being convienent (synced with cloud storage) or ultra secure (never leaves my device). I also appreciate the browser plugins and quickmenu that lets me search, open, and edit my passwords quickly - and the password generator is a bonus.

Folders and Tags are used and work the way YOU want them to. 1Password doesn’t force you into a method of working like other products.

A more recent feature is to support OTP (one time passwords) like two factor auth used for many products like Google accounts and enrolling them using 2d bar codes is brilliant.

One ding against this product - pushing a monthly subscription isn’t a place I want software to go but I’m glad they’ve maintained other purchase options.

A few things I’d love to see is:

Support for SecurID RSA two factor auth keys
Password Generator profiles - being able to set profiles for the passwords being generated (see KeePass)

Essential. Essential. Essential.

1Password is the most essential piece of software I own, besides the operating system itself. It is so convenient and so versatile that I would be set back hours or days trying to sort out the dull-but-important bits of my life without it. 1Password is so easy to use, and it increases my personal security immensely, even despite the worst security anti-patterns that tech companies and banks will toss your way. And on top of that, the app is gorgeously, modernly no-nonsense.

In the age of the Equifax breach, you can’t afford to take your personal security lightly. 1Password has been here for me for many years. It’s worth every penny and then some.
