Amazing device, very good app

I've had three Dropcam Pro cameras set up at my vacation house to help me keep an eye on the place when I am not there. The cameras provide crystal clear resolution thru the app. I've had 100% up time with the cameras / app over the past year. I think those that are having connection problems with their cameras probably have either a weak wifi signal where the camera is or they have purchased a bandwidth/speed internet package that has too slow upload speeds. The cameras record at 720p or 1080i so pushing that video to the cloud requires a strong consistent wifi signal and a decent upload speed. My upload speed is usually around 8.77Mbps, download 40Mbps. The app has never crashed on me. I run it on both an iPad Air 2 and an iPhone 5s. I assume older devices might have trouble but I also assume that would be devices running something earlier the iOS 8. Don't let the other reviews turn you away. I've been happy with all aspects of this camera and the associated app. This review is specifically for the legacy Dropcam app. I am not as big a fan of the newer Nest app (Nest acquired Dropcam months ago).

Used for years, and hate it

I've used dropcams for years. Long before they were aquired by Google and rolled into Nest. At the beginning, the product was decent. It mostly functioned, and I was buying a "startup" product so I didn't mind the occassional quirk. Since the aquisition, it has only gotten worse not better. You would think that gaining support from Google would make the product class leading right? Not at all. The app is unstable, I constatly open the app to find that it has gone to a "White screen" mode where nothing functions. This happens about once a day. Why do I open the app several times a day? Because I have the app setup to automatically turn the cameras on / off when I leave / return home. And that functionality doesn't work about half the time. Meaning I need to launch the app and do it manually. Sometimes, when I launch the app, I am randomly signed out. This happens at least once a week. It used to only happed every once in a while and I thought it corresponded to app updates. But now it happens so much that it's just an annoyance. Seriously one of the most frustrating product I have ever used. Wish I could give it ZERO stars.

Why don't I use something else? I invested so much in a multiple camera setup, that it's so much of a hastle. But, believe me, once I have the chance to switch I am bailing and never looking back.

not reliable, competing devices better

—competing cams that have some storage on the device are starting to come to market. Instead of investing in another NestCam with outrageously high cloud storage cost for a minimum of 7 days of recording (about 5 more than I need), and dismal software development, I've instead opted for other products that offer free on-device storage and lower cloud storage costs. People first starting with these type of home monitoring cams should seriously consider the alternatives which are much more economical. DropCam was once the leader but competition is thankfully catching up.
—For over a year geofencing functionality was not working. Now it does, but unreliably, which ostensibly is just as bad: in the end I need to remember to manually check, or swipe to activate.
—Notifications are sent regardless of whether movement is detected inside or outside of zones of interest, obviating the reason for establishing such zones to begin with.
—The iPhone version of this software is ridiculously hampered in functionality when compared to the iPad version or the desktop DropCam/nest site.
—My DropCams were sold to me as 1080p, but that functionality has been disabled and they only stream 720p. Really shady business practices. I will never buy another, and I regret investing my $$ in this company.
