I tend to like these games and the backtracking was massively simplified through the map option. I took points for those annoying 'gems', the lack of guidance in some areas of plot that don't help the player realize what to do next.
I do wish that the clues for finding random objects wasn't so sparse. The lack of any leading words makes the search go from "go find this, okay" to a frustrating meticulous going over the whole game looking for something barely recognizable.
Still interesting, although this company Big Fish uses so many different game developers that there isn't any kind of product quality line. The difference from one game to the next can be staggering and you often have to learn new control, which seems counter intuitive since many of the games seem to operate on the same basic parameters for the GUI. It would be nice if you advertised which studio is doing each one on iTunes so it would be easier to find their other works. And maybe consider a universal program for all your mystery puzzle series. It would save you the time of reprogramming the whole thing endlessly. I'm not saying you wouldn't tweak a bit, particularly visually for the mood of the story, but the basic control aught be be universe cross platform.
Just my own thought.
Good Game, But Needs Polish
I enjoyed this game. The story was interesting, and the way it was set up reminded me of the feeling of King's Quest (the gameplay itself didn't, though!). One of the things that I really appreciated is that even though this game follows many other hidden object games in giving even the merest pretense of an excuse for a hidden object scene, those puzzles were very brief--this cut down the frustration a lot! The hint system is lacking a good amount of clarity--sometimes it would be overly helpful, while other times it would be frustratingly vague. It's also true that the touch controls are a little wonky and oversensitive; for example, sometimes one would move to the next screen instead of trying to pick up an object. Another problem was that sometimes items would need to be placed exactly right in order to do what they needed to do. The game is probably too short to be worth the full price, but I bought it on sale and was glad that I did--definitely worth it. Overall, it's a very enjoyable game with fun puzzles. I did not have any problems with stability (iOS 5 on an iPad 2).
I have almost finished the game and still can't figure out where the gypsies come in! There are gnomes and fairies and ancient statues, but no gypsies!
This game opens mini windows of items to pick up, some of which are almost impossible to identify, so I guess. I'm usually right, but I find it annoying.
Part way through, the game stuck and wouldn't allow me to pick up any of the items. I had to delete and reinstall the game, starting over at the beginning again.
I also hate the jumping around from one location to the other. The map helps, but I still don't like it. There is no rhyme or reason to the jumping and the features often don't work the first few times you tap on them. The "gems" are placed right next to scene changing invisibles, so when you click to pick it up, you find yourself in another location. DUH! The recipes for the potions are incorrect! You don't add all the items, but surprise, the potion is made! There are more problems, but I think you get the idea.
This is a game I should have NOT bought. It has great potential, but missed the mark, in my opinion. The graphics are beautiful, but the problems overshadow them. The "help" is of little help. It will tell you that something has to be done, but nothing else.
Save your money. There are MUCH better games out there.
