"aacorn signals a revolution in the way we provide AAC support to children.. The first to really capitalize on the strengths of the iPad" - Professor Sue Fletcher-Watson (University of Edinburgh).
aacorn is the next generation assistive communication solution designed especially for non verbal and speech delayed children and recognized as a genuine break-through by parents, educators and speech therapists around the world!
Included in Apple's "Special Education" collection of recommended apps, and used by 300+ organisations worldwide, aacorn can be easily used by even the youngest or most developmentally delayed communicators.
aacorn bridges the huge gulf between PECS cards and AAC systems designed for adults. It is more engaging for children, but also incredibly powerful, making AAC more accessible to children who cannot type or spell or who find the older grid-based systems so frustrating.
Here’s just some of the feedback from leading speech and language experts:
+ "aacorn is the first solution that will help to unlock a child's real potential to communicate." - Professor Sheena Reilly (Murdoch Childrens Research Institute).
+ "This innovative app really could change the way we introduce, teach and model AAC systems to early communicators." - Amanda Hartmann (SLP) Spectronics.
Why are they so excited… because aacorn is so much more than another app with buttons that speak! aacorn replaces the old grid of folders layout used by last generation apps and devices (where often children can’t find the words they need), and introduces a radically improved design for children that is much easier to use.
A clean and clear system of branching pathways we call the Word Tree™. Your child makes a word choice and new branches with suggestions for the next word in a sentence present themselves AUTOMATICALLY as needed.
No More ‘Hunting and Pecking’ for words hidden in grids or folders! No need to be able to use a keyboard! No requirement to have an exceptional memory to find words, and no more stick figure drawings or robotic voices!! The difference is amazing!

Loving hearing my son!!!
My son has been using AAC through apps on the iPad for about 2 years. He started with a very popular grid based app with many folders, and his school recently made the switch to another app is a great program, but isn't working for us at home or out and about. Our son needed an app that was solely focused on speech, and was simple to use and navigate through. While looking for an AAC app that would meet his needs, I came across Aacorn. I researched it's capabilities, watched the videos that users and developers had posted, googled it and checked out ratings, etc. I brought my findings to my husband, we discussed it and decided to purchase because we thought Will would do well with it.
I am thrilled to say that my son has really taken to it. He has been using Aacorn for a few months now, and aside from the vocabulary not being very big at this point, he is a whiz with it. While he prefers to use his favorite sentences- because they are quick, the complexity in the sentences he can now compose is amazing to watch. In 3 months we have jumped from simple 3-4 word sentences to 6-7 words. And he comments now instead of just requesting. We love the app so far. We can't wait to see what future updates will bring. If you are looking for an AAC app for your loved one that is simple to use, yet has the ability for your loved one to create complex sentences I highly recommend Aacorn!
I have been using this app with my 3 year old son for many months now (he was 2 when we started), and it has been absolutely wonderful. This app gave my child a voice when he was having a really difficult time making any sounds. He was working with PECS prior to aacorn, but his receptive vocabulary was expanding so rapidly that we decided to find a better solution.
Now he has started to put sounds together to form words. Thanks to aacorn's very natural sounding word tree, he already knew how to make phrases, so he can even say a few himself now! It is a fun, modern AAC solution that is easy to use, even for very young children. There is a community of aacorn users on facebook that allows you to communicate directly with the app's creators, so updates are directly influenced by feedback. I have nothing but love for this app, it has helped my son immensely in his journey.
I was lucky enough to stumble onto this wonderful app for our nonverbal 2 year old, and so far have been very pleased! The interface is unique, and can easily be customized to specific needs. The use of voices of real children instead of the usual computerized output is a breath of fresh air. I can't wait to see the new update!
