Best looking Flight Sim for my older mac

Best looking flight sim for my aging laptop. I will review this copy if ever I finish downloading the time consuming update. I wish the planes weren’t quite so expesive, hopefully the update will offer better deals and will still run on my machine.

Really???

I bought this in 2012 when my mac was still supported only to find out its not anymore, even though it was running perfectly fine before the update. This is really crummy of IPACS, they really should either make it work with 2012 macs or reimburse me for the entirety of the game’s cost. Really really upset.

Flight Sim for the rest of us

If you want to practice your instrument procedures, land on aircraft carriers, fly large passenger jets, control every knob and dial as on the real aircraft, then this simulator is not for you.

This simulator is for those who appreciate the JOY of flying a small plane under VFR (visual flight rules) conditions. Part of the joy comes from enjoying the scenery, and here this app really shines. The scenery is simply STUNNING. Instead of trying to implement the whole world, the developers restricted the world of this simulator to just Switzerland, one of the most scenic countries in the world, with snow capped peaks, verdant valleys, rivers, and lakes. There is also a fair number of 3D structures close to the airports to bolster your enjoyment of the program during takeoffs and landings. Plenty of trees all over the place (well… not over the tree line)!

Although I am not a pilot, other reviewers have stated that the flight models are well implemented. Still, the planes are easy to fly (the ones I tried - have not tried the F-18 fighter or the acrobatic planes). The high resolution scenery makes it easier to land a plane as you can see the runway from further out, so you can line up earlier and then just make small corrections as you get closer.

The planes do not have working radios and navigation instruments, but everything else is there. In addition, the program features a moving map display to help with navigation. It also displays the direction and distance to the two nearest airports. The planes feature an autopilot that not only can hold altitude and heading, but can also attain new preset headings and altitudes.

The simulator is preset to a certain time and date, meaning you cannot change seasons or time of day. You cannot fly at night, but then again, you would miss all that gorgeous scenery! Also, you would probably crash into one of those numerous Swiss mountains. There is no rain or snow (although there is snow on the mountain tops). However, it is NOT all boring blue skies. You can set up the amount of clouds in the sky, and even fly through them (watch out for those mountains!), set fog, and control winds and turbulence, and thermals. Thermals, of course, are critical for the gliders.

Not only is the scenery spectacular, but the airplanes are also very detailed, inside and out. There are plenty of views inside and outside the cockpick. When you swich seats in the cockpit, a pilot appears in the left seat (it would look strange to have the pilot’s seat be empty). The external views show the navigation lights and strobes flashing. There is an annoying small smudge of dirt on the left side of my Cessna’s 172’s windscreen - hard to see, but realistic nontheless. Sound is also great - engine, wind noises, landing, change in noise due to flap deployment, etc.

The simulator can be controlled with the mouse, but it is easier with a joystick. I am using a Logitech Extreme 3D Pro (~$37) for Windows (works fine on a Mac - just plug it in to a USB port and you are good to go). The simulator has a menu command that brings up a table that lets you configure joystick (and keyboard) buttons to your liking.

The program allows to select among 6 airplanes, and from a number of airports in Switzerland for takeoffs or landings. At most airports you select which end of the runway you want to start from. At a large airport such as Zurich you can select from more than one runway. You do always start at the head of the runway.

My Mac is from 2010 with an i7 processor and and an ATI graphics card with 1 GIG graphics memory - came that way from the factory. I have Texture Quality, Terrain Mesh and Terrain Texture set to High Quality, everything else set to Medium. With these settings, I get frame rates from 30 to 60, mostly in the 40s and 50s. Keep in mind that movies are 24 fps and and TV is 30 fps. So, everything moves smoothly with no jitter or hesitation. On my Macbook Pro with the 2.5 MHz i7 chip and Nvidia graphics card with 2 GB memory, but with retina display I get similar frame rates, although not so much at the high end (due to the higher resolution display).

Bottom line - a superb flight simulator for the Mac “for the rest of us."
