AIM is redefining social networking – add a location to your status, post to your favorite social networks or chat directly with your Facebook or Google Talk friends. Check-in with foursquare. Post your status to Twitter, Facebook, MySpace and Lifestream with one tap. Now chatting with your Facebook or Google Talk friends is as easy as using AIM.

Features include:
•Chat directly with your Facebook and Google Talk friends
•Built from the ground up for the Apple iPad and compatible with iOS 4.2.
•NEW! Select your own photo for your Buddy Icon or wallpaper or select a theme from our library.
•Log in with your Facebook username.
•Chat directly with your Facebook friends.
•Start typing your friend's name in the Buddy List search and AIM will instantly display the results.
•Add your location to your status message.
•Post your photos to your Lifestream (up to 40 at one time) or comment on your Buddy’s photo or status.
•Get updates from your favorite social networks in one easy to navigate Lifestream window.
•Send and receive messages over Wi-Fi, EDGE, or 3G networks*.
•Connect to anyone on the AIM network worldwide, whether they're on Facebook, AOL®, AIM, ICQ®, .Mac® or MobileMe.
•Configure multiple usernames and switch between identities any time.
•You can send IMs to anyone who has a cell phone that supports text messaging* - even from a WiFi-only iPad.

It's easy to get started. Just sign in using your existing AOL/AIM, Facebook, .Mac or MobileMe name, or register for a free screen name right from your device.

Any service can send messages. But with AIM, you're really connected.

AIM is also available for iPhone in both ad-free and standard versions. Just search for AIM in the iTunes App Store.

* iPad Wi-Fi + 3G supports EDGE and 3G; AOL does not charge a fee to send text messages using AIM. Text messages are treated the same as normal IM messages and are included as part of your device's data plan. SMS features are not available in all countries.

What's New in Version 1.5.3

Bottom line: Be patient, some frustration to be had. Flawed but (eventually) gets most of the job done. Can't beat the price.

I love the fact that I can speak to contacts on AIM, Facebook, and Gmail from the same app and all in the same screen.

I do not appreciate AIM crashing for seemingly no reason, usually at least daily. Messages frequently disappear and reappear, whether incoming or outgoing, read or unread, and regardless of AIM or third party contacts. Sometimes notifications of a new message do not appear, so I only find out I have a new message by loading the app. Banner ads change the location of where you are trying to click, often "jumping in the way" so they are accidentally accessed. Cannot change category for friends lists. I receive occasional complaints that friends did not receive a message, which could be a problem outside the app.

Buggy, almost a year since last update

While running iOS 8.1.2 (the latest as of this writing), if the keyboard is visible and the orientation is changed, views lay out incorrectly in such a way that the app is seriously crippled and difficult to use. For example, the most recent message in a chat might appear beneath the bottom of its containing scroll view, or the IM input field might be hidden even when it has focus. As far as I can tell, there are no easy user workarounds for these issues; I've tried rotating the device back and forth, opening various settings screens, and so forth. Nothing seems to work short of killing the app and relaunching it.

In order to fix this, AOL has at least a couple of options I can think of:

They could release an app update with a workaround, if not a fix. After nearly a year of no updates, this is long overdue.

They could stop being freakishly controlling about which developers get access to their OSCAR protocol spec, which could pave the way for a new ecosystem of third-party AIM applications that aren't rubbish.

Instead, AOL opts to screw over their users, mostly through inaction, except when they bend over backwards to thwart third-party efforts. Truly, we are witnessing the Mad King in corporate form, and I hope AOL realizes the error of its ways before it has no more users left to neglect.

IM app

After a previous update, my IM app was malfunctioning on my "original" iphone. To see if I could fix it, I deleted it and tried to reinstall it. It would not reinstall. After paying an arm and a leg for that smart phone, why can't the original version of an app upload to my phone even though newer versions have come out. Basically, Apple is forcing me to buy a newer version of the iphone, or go with a smartphone from a different manufacturer. I'm giving the app 4 stars, since it works good on my other phones.
