App Great Before Forced Discrimination
You got to love being black in America and how we are so easily, and politely at times, are judged based on what I assume is simply an age old fear of Melanin. I'm trying to be nice but before I was forced to use a profile picture I never had an issue using the airbnb in my families travels. I may have used my account 4 times total on different trips for typically extended weekend stays out of town. Would rate the app 5 stars back then but in our socially unconscious age of "social media" and fear of anything or anyone who does not look or act as irrational as they do.
My 1st time trying to book a home once I added my profile picture was a failure. Despite the clear block of day availability listed on the app when I went to reserve I was advised it wasn't available... Really thought nothing of it but after a year or so and a few more denials on "available" listed cabins, homes or apartments we might have been looking at in one of the areas we frequent (Charlotte, App Mountains, Outer Banks NCareas) it just seemed to much of a coincidence to ignore. Been a long time since I even looked at the app and we typically try to find "Melanin enhanced" owners to alleviate the fears invoked by the un-enhanced owners.
my first time using airbnb was so NOT a great experience. Our room was so NOT clean and not as described. Couldn't even get a refund back so I'm never gonna use this app again. I have a feeling that getting a refund is almost impossible, especially when the host gets strict cancellation policy so we ended up wasting our money. I rather go book hotel somewhere else. it might be more expensive but it's easier to deal with when problem arises. This is just our opinion. we might just be unlucky to get such a bad room. but I definitely do not want to risk using airbnb anymore in the future since there's no way to guarantee that the room will be clean until you're there.
Our vacation was ruined because of either poor control or scamming "owners".
We booked a property precisely as directed by the app. Booked and confirmed, two cars traveled 7 hours each to find that there was no available property.
Trying to resolve the problem resulted in another three hours exchanging email.
Remedy offered was refund + 10% if we rebook, but by this time it was after 10:00 PM, and their system apparently does not permit contact after 9:00.
Next option was to get two hotel rooms then spend the next day trying to book another property last minute at a beach town in peak season. Not how I want to use vacation. Since hotels were not an option (We would have had to put a minor in a room by herself), We decided to drive home. Since we couldn't rebook, airbnb took back the 10% penalty! They did offer a credit for future bookings, but I will never use them again.
I have to believe our experience was exceptional, but it also clearly identifies poor management of an unreliable service.
