AirCassette is a cassette player application for iPhone and iPod Touch. The playing song information is written on the cassette label. The tape spins realistically while the music plays. Rewind and fast forward are also animated to really take you back to the 80s.

"But all that is essentially icing over the app's sweet interface which is what makes this player stand out from other cassette player apps out there." – Übergizmo

"AirCassette for iPhone, however, is one cassette tape that's just plain awesome. That's because it's not really a cassette tape (obviously), but it's a terrific music player that's designed to look like one, and it looks fantastic." – Cult of Mac

"AirCassette taps into that nostalgic feeling by giving me an awesome UI that awesomely re-creates a tape. Seeing the cassette tape spin on my iPhone's screen makes me happy. Like I remember where I came from or something." – Gizmodo

"Watching a cassette tape spin on the iPhone's high-resolution display is oddly calming and, thanks to digital compression, the audio is far superior in AirCassette than it ever was on my Sony Walkman." – NY Times

Choose your favourite from a selection of nostalgic cassette tapes, and share it with your friends on Facebook and Twitter or via email. The name of the song, artist and album is written on the shared cassette label. Support your favourite artist by sharing an iTunes song preview and a link to the iTunes Store. You can even share the entire song queue with your friends, and let them know what will be the soundtrack of your day.

With AirCassette cassette player app you can listen to music without interruption while you browse your music library and add tracks to the play queue. In the queue view you can check the number of songs in the queue and the playing time of the entire queue. You can delete one song at a time with a swipe-to-delete gesture, or clear the entire queue with one tap. You can also save your queues as mixtapes.

AirCassette supports AirPlay.

"Share" is misleading!

It's a cute looking app and fine for my own listening, but I bought AirCassette so I could make a mixed tape and email it to others, based on the description the developer wrote under the "Share" paragraph. So, I made a tape and emailed it to myself and couldn't open it to listen. I then emailed the developer for help. He promptly replied saying, "You can only share iTunes song previews that you can listen, and the cassette images. You can't share music because of copyright laws." I emailed him back asking what's the point of the app as I can just make a playlist in iTunes if I'm the only one that's going to listen to it. He again very promptly wrote back saying, "The point of AirCassette sharing is that you can tell your friends what you are listening. And if you include the iTunes preview and Store link, they can listen 30 sec preview of the song and maybe buy it if they like it. With AirCassette you can support your favorite musicians and artists by sharing."

Like I said, it's cute, but I see no purpose for this app unless I want to sit and watch the cassette wheels spin, which I don't. I also feel no need to advertise for iTunes music. I gave it 3 stars only because I don't HATE it. I just feel misled by the developer's description.

best in class

There are several apps that emulate cassettes one way or another. This one is the best, hands down.

Few requests however:
1) There MUST be more cassettes designs to choose from. The ones included are just a few models, cloned with different stickers and plastic colors. There were other classic designs that really need to be in this app, like typical for many countries 'album cassette': translucent case and dark metallic sleeve inside. There is a huge room for improvement here.

2) May be there is a sense to add mode where the app will override 'autolock screen' feature (like video player apps and 'night stand watch apps' do). It's really annoying to go to prefs to disable lock if you want occasionally to 'play' with this app. It could be better to have option to enable instant display-on from inside the app. If it is possible at all, there could be even a mode where the screen is locked, but the cassette is still displayed (enabling you to hold the device any way you like, without the need not to touch the screen).

3) It would add even more authentic fill if tape reels were resizing not only with 'previous track' and 'next track' commands but during playback of the current song.

IMHO that would make the app just purely perfect! Anyway, it's still best in class already.

It's a cute idea, just poorly implemented

The native music player on the iPhone isn't terribly robust, but it has an established method for organizing your media. Here you have to hunt through a different and severely limited organization structure. It also doesn't even provide access for audiobooks or podcasts. During my initial test of this i took a call and couldn't hear the caller; this app just kept playing without releasing audio control to the phone. That's worth losing several starts right there.
In the end this is a cute app for maybe a minute, but when you're interested in listening to your media without watching an illustration of a cassette you'll go right back to the default music player. Maybe in the future these problems will be fixed, but from the kind of updates it's had so far i doubt it.
