Editors’ Notes

No two people have the same email habits, but everyone will find something to love in this Apple Design Award winner. It looks great, it’s easy to customize, and it’s packed with features we didn’t even know we needed—like sending an email using just Siri and marking messages as “done.” But our absolute favorite part? The ability to hit Snooze on messages we want to return to later.

Loaded with features

Airmail’s strongest attraction is its customizability. It can be tweaked to suit the user’s tastes in look and feel. Because there are several settings, it can take a while to learn the full range, but it is worth taking the time to experiment. I found that going to the app’s website and reading the documentation useful. At the website a pop-up window offers the opportunity to chat in real time with a helper. I chatted with Steven, whose response to my question was prompt, helpful and courteous. The iOS app by itself is very good, but I recommend pairing it with the MacOS counterpart for maximum benefit. My inboxes have a tendency to accumulate more emails than I can easily manage. Airmail makes sorting messages into folders easy and also allows “snoozing” messages—getting them out of sight for a specified amount of time. Snoozed messages are put into a special folder that can be opened at any time in Airmail itself or in other mail clients. Alternatively, a message can be instantly transferred to a “To do” folder to be acted upon later, or one of several other temporary folders. There is also a quick-response option to let a sender know with a single tap on an icon that the message has been received and read.

Crashes a lot, good when it's working

JimmyMonkeyBrains

I am currently in a hurry, and immediately prior to writing this, I had opened Airmail to send a quick note before I get going . . . aaaand it crashed again, but I told myself last time it crashed that I'd write a review if it happened again, and so here I am writing my review that Airmail is great when it works but that it frustratingly crashes too often (as far as I recall Apple Mail never crashed on me). I'd say it always does this at the most inopportune time, but if you want to write an email and the app freezes and won't work, that's always "inopportune." I do note the pattern that it rarely crashes when I'm in the middle of using it, it mostly does so when I first go to the app from a different app. As to frequency, every couple of days. I can't think of how many emails are in between that.

Fwiw, I bought the app having read about some of these issues, and I still think it's a good app and think I can live with the frustration . . . mostly, tonight, right now, is the first time I thought to myself that I'm a bit tired of this and should just go back to Apple Mail. While Airmail is good and has great functionality, etc., it's nonetheless simply more straightforward and less disruptive to my "flow" to use the native Apple Mail app. So that's where I am right now with it.
