New! - Pressure Altitude display for those using the iPhone 6 or iPhone 6 Plus - those iPhones have an internal barometer providing very accurate pressure altitude - I flight tested this and my transponder pressure altitude output matched the iPhones exactly - a great way to double check that your transponder is providing the correct altitude information to ATC.
iPhone Gyroscope Aircraft Attitude Indicator (a.k.a Artificial Horizon). This app uses the "real" Gyroscope built into the iPhone, so it is much more accurate than the older apps without Gyro access (accelerometer only).
I am an instrument rated Airplane Pilot and a Helicopter Pilot, I designed this app for a fun demonstration of how flight instruments in a real airplane work. My goal is to also have this work well in actual flight (see notes below).
This latest version allows for removal of the built in "gyro drift" that all chip based gyroscopes have. Since each iPhone, or iPad 2 has a different amount of drift, this allows you to calibrate your "specific" unit.
Runs in landscape mode for the full size screen and motion, high resolution retina display graphics! Also great for flight school instruction and demonstration of the iPhone, iPad - Gyroscope.
Note for Pilots : This latest release (4.0) has major improvements in flight operation, as well as a much better display. No longer will the top turn scale move off the screen during large pitch and roll movement. The screen now works as a top of the line unit! Also major improvements were made in the removal of gyroscope drift in the air, and making sure it does not reset to wings level while still in a turn.
Its important to remember this is still not FAA approved and should not be depended upon for flight navigation.
For non Pilots, or Pilots using this for ground instruction, it works flawlessly with the Stock Gyroscope on the ground. And is perfect for ground instruction. The stock iPhone 4 Gyroscope code is smooth as silk on the ground, make sure you do not use "AIR MODE ON" for ground use/instruction. Air mode will seem erratic on the ground, it depends on the G forces and compass changes in flight to work.
Please check the tab for this app on our support website for weekly updates on the test flights and status.
FAQ: In the Airplane, the app shows a turn, and then resets to wings level? Make sure you are in AIR MODE, if so, this means the slider bar is to far left, move it all the way to the right for a test. The Slider bar controls the gyroscope drift removal time, find the right setting for your airplane.
Pressure Altitude display for users with iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 Plus - using the internal barometer in those iPhones.
Ratings and Reviews
Just started working on my private pilots' license. This will be fun to impress my row mates next airline flight. Only problem is I can't find a way to set the pressure altimeter. It seems to be locked into some nominal sea level value.
I Watched the video of this in actual flight, clearly this is the only attitude gyro app that is even close to really working in a real airplane, and for .99c! I think this developer should charge more, it must have cost thousands in fuel alone to test fly this! Good Job!
I have tried all of the accelerometer based indicators, they are useless for real airplanes! Its great to see a Gyroscope based one finally! I took this in my Cessna today, the pitch was ok, and the roll works at first but then seems to reset very slowly, still much better than the old accelerometer ones! I still give 5 stars because I see the Pilot developer is actively working on fine tuning this (which can't be cheap to test fly!) and for .99c this is a steal! less than a cup of coffee. My son loves to play with it on the ground as well! Good luck!
Considering this was not a free app I would not recommend it (at all) without dev doing a LOT MORE work on adding some useful features. Must have a zero function and a portrait mode if you fairly want to charge for this. Other features would be nice - ie gyro compass, choice of a classic instrument view, slip/skid, night view. But zero and portrait modes are musts if you expect to collect a buck for this anemic app.
I will gladly amend my review with an update from the developer.
UPDATE - added a star for ability to cage the roll axis but this should also apply to pitch. I cannot view the screen in it's mount with the phone aligned perpendicularly to vert axis of the plane. App continues to be of limited utility because of this. I am impressed with the developers update frequency. Atta boy! Keep it up and make this a real app.
