Algebra Champ

By Brian West

Description

New to algebra? Still find that "x" a little intimidating? Download this free application and you'll be a champ in no time! Algebra Champ provides introductory level algebra skills practice with timed rounds, high scores, and a cage fight theme.

Designed for grades 6 - 8, Algebra Champ provides practice solving straightforward, single variable linear equations in an entertaining, game-like environment. Questions are randomly generated and presented in rounds of five. Answers are manageable integers (-10 to 10) and presented as multiple choice.

Beginners may need to jot down a step or two on a piece of paper. More advanced players will be able to solve these problems on the fly. Play a few rounds each day and you'll quickly gain an increased comfort level with entry level algebraic expressions, negative integers, and quick mental calculations.

The fight concept works

My son finds this app fun, and therefore does more math. Well done. I will give it a fifth star if you add more diversity to the avatars.

Updated review for 1.3: The levels are appropriately differentiated by difficulty, including in the use of negative numbers. The other review here that says otherwise is just wrong. This is my only review of a math app, and I chose to write it because this one works.

Of limited value

The game suffers from offering multiple-choice answers ; kids not strong in arithmetic will end up guessing ; kids who are strong in arithmetic get clues from the answers which can short-circuit the care they need to take, e.g. With 5x=-10 the student can guess the answer will be 2 or -2, so doesn't need to take care with the signs. Make be of limited use as practice. The variable is always 'x'; varying it would have been a nice touch.

Eh

If you are attempting to improve algebra skills of six year olds, congrats. But really. You're not teaching algebra. There is no variation in the types of problems. Way too easy. Parents, the only reason you would buy this would be to improve very simple algebra skills of a small child with a very very very simple basic understanding of algebra. This is a very crummy waste of space.
