In this gorgeous twist on the infinite runner, you guide an agile snowboarder down a never-ending mountain, pulling off backflips over icy chasms and grinding along rooftops in sleepy villages. Simple one-finger controls make it instantly accessible, but tackling each level’s trio of challenges requires deft reflexes. With its exquisitely rendered visuals, soothing music, and finely tuned gameplay, Alto’s Adventure is simultaneously serene and exciting.

In games, a key component every developer, especially those of the infinite runner genre, know: in order to captivate your player base, you must be able to distinguish between difficulty and challenge. I have never been completely into infinite runner because borderline difficulty seems to be a theme among them, to the point where I didn’t feel any sense of progression; however, as with all games that captured my attention, the aesthetics got me interested in this one.

What’s addicting about Alto’s Adventure is not the difficulty, nor the atmosphere or aesthetics; it’s that perfectly balance of all three. The atmosphere and music make each run truly feel like a journey; there’s a sense of exhilaration and freedom that few infinite runners have. Most infinite runners are about avoiding death first and high scores later; this game tilts the “dying” portion in your favor (meaning, you won’t die a lot) which gives you room to enjoy the atmosphere. I can’t praise it enough and yes, I paid a full $4.99 with my own money. I’m a student working seasonal jobs like dog sitting, which you don’t get often; I earned probably $50 total these past few months and spent a whole $5 chunk on this game — and it feels worth it.

Disappointed 😔

Update: Broken on iPhone. Finally saved all the way back up to purchase the Qing suit AGAIN only to find that it activates and deactivates at random, causing you to crash and making the game unplayable when you have a wingsuit available. This game is so broke, and feedback appears to be ignored by the devs. Avoid! 🤬💩👎🏻

I really liked this game. It’s beautiful, hypnotic, and relaxing. Then, almost precisely as I was admiring how polished it is, the wingsuit which I had saved 7500 credits for (the most expensive unlock in the game) and purchased suddenly disappeared from my inventory, requiring me to save up another 7500 for it a second time. I have the Game Center achievement for obtaining and using the wingsuit, but it’s just *poof* gone from gameplay as if I had never purchased it, occurring right in between two uninterrupted games. One game it’s there, the next it’s not. My theory is it has to do with syncing between two devices. My iPhone’s copy must have overwritten my progress on my iPad while I was playing? I’ve re-synced everything through iCloud but it just doesn’t come back. Brutal bug. If the devs can restore my progress I’ll update my review, but I haven’t found a way to contact them for support. For now my trust in the game is lost. No matter how good any game is, if your progress deletes itself seemingly at random how can you ever progress properly?
