A NEW WAY TO BE TOGETHER
In addition to managing your devices with Alexa, the updated Alexa App lets you call and message Amazon Echo and Echo Dot owners, and anyone else with the Alexa App on their phones. With the Alexa App, conversations and contacts go where you go. When you’re away from home, use the app to make a quick call or send a message to your family’s Echo. Make video calls to friends and family who have an Echo Show or the Alexa App. You can also enable a new feature called Drop In for the special cases when you want to connect with your closest friends and family. For example, you can drop in to let the family know it’s time for dinner, see the baby’s nursery, or check in with a close relative. Calling and messaging are available to customers with iPhones on iOS 9.0 or later.
ALWAYS READY, CONNECTED, AND FAST
For Alexa device owners, the free Amazon Alexa App is a companion to your Alexa device for setup, remote control, and enhanced features. Alexa is always ready to play your favorite music, provide weather and news updates, answer questions, create lists, and much more. Alexa's brain is in the cloud, so she continually learns and adds more functionality over time. The more you use Alexa, the more she adapts to your speech patterns, vocabulary, and personal preferences.
HOW IT WORKS
Interactions with devices with Alexa are automatically mirrored visually on your Amazon Alexa App, providing more information as you want it. The Amazon Alexa App lets you easily manage your alarms, music, shopping lists, and more -- wherever you are.
FAST WI-FI and EASY SET UP
Connect to your home's Wi-Fi network using the free Amazon Alexa App, with its simple guided setup. Now you can stream all of your music, listen to radio stations, and have access to news and information, all by voice -- or with the Amazon Alexa App's intuitive interface.

warning for update Sept 2017
This app continues to devolve with each update. As of the latest update you now have to manually select music for your other dot or echo if you want them both to play. I keep the echo music on all day and when I shower, I stream from my dot to the shower radio. If I ask Dot alexa to play 60's music, she says you already have a device playing and would I rather hear it on this device. If you say yes, my echo turns off and the dot plays. Certainly Bezo's can hire better developers than this.
I still cannot fathom the idea that the developers think this update is an improvement. It is the exact opposite. Volume control and "now playing " features are no longer static at the bottom of the screen. Latest version May 9, 2017 cripples the ability to quickly access volume control on iPhone. Can take as many as 4 steps just to get to a volume button. And the time between these steps is not "snappy", if you will. The finger slide volume control is buggy. You can't even see the volume number because it's directly under your finger tip. Pitiful pitiful implementation. App is clunky and slow to respond to touches on iPhone 6 plus. I would love to revert to the older version.
Want to do lists? Better off with paper.
I can't handle using this app. I keep trying because I desperately want to use it for our grocery lists. That's most of what we use Alexa for. But when I go to the store, the cell service inside is always spotty at best, and the app in CONSTANTLY refreshing and trying to get a new signal, so even if I miraculously pull up the list, within seconds it disappears while trying to sync again. It's incredibly frustrating.
And while they claim to have an offline shopping mode, when I go into Costco, which has no cell coverage at all where I live, it spends all it's time trying to find a signal, and shows me nothing. I've had to call my husband to tell me what's on the list every time, when it should be in my hand! I've even turned off WiFi hoping that would help, but no luck. And I'm sorry, but I shouldn't have to turn off cell data to see my grocery list (which, by the way, doesn't even work either).
Long story short, this app is utterly useless for lists. You're better off with paper.
I actually love these especially since they can be used as an intercom. I have 5 kids so anytime I want to drop in or get their attention, I can easily do so.
Also I love controlling my app, Roomba etc without trying to fine my phone or stop what I'm doing (especially nice when say, cooking dinner and listening to music and a kid comes in to talk and I need to turn down or pause the music)
My kids think it's cool too. They love asking what the weather is like out.
I'm not sure I would "recommend" it as it's not something anyone "needs" but I would say "yes" if someone was interested in one and wanted to know if it was worth getting.
I wish it had more understanding over certain phrases with some skills.
