Learn the American English consonant and vowel sounds that typically trouble Vietnamese speakers. First, learn how to position your mouth. Next, listen to different native speakers and repeat after them. Then play games where you must sharpen your American English sound discrimination skills to determine which sound was said. Did you hear rip or rib? fool or full? Zeus or juice? Were the two words you heard the same or different? Of the three words you heard, which one was different? What words do you overhear at a loud party?

Once you learn to hear the difference between similar sounds that don't exist in Vietnamese, you will begin to produce the sounds correctly. Finally, hear the sounds in sentences and repeat them with the proper rhythm and intonation.

Great practice for hearing English sounds

You don't know how difficult it is to hear the sounds until you've tried this App. I have students who didn't realize distinguishing between sounds was difficult until they tried listening to minimal pairs (similar words) and found out they thought the similar words sounded the same. They're surprised to see the word "wrong" on the screen after they've selected an answer. But they can press "previous" to listen and try again. Now my students use this App to practice "Same or Different" and "Which is Different." In the classroom, they can go at their own pace and get instant feedback. In a group lesson, sometimes one students catches on earlier and hears the correct sound. Now the student who is behind or ahead of the others can practice at his own pace. They can even practice at home. The voices on the recordings are very clear and natural. And the variety of vocabulary is wonderful! This App is great for beginners to become exposed to American sounds and challenging for advanced students who still struggle with accurate pronunciation.

My Sister Sue

My hairdresser is Vietnamese, and we love her and she is fabulous with our hair, but we can't understand everything she says. She has a really hard time saying my sister's name, Susan. She calls her "Shoes in" and it has become a big laughing joke. So while she was doing my hair, I searched on my iPhone for a pronunciation app and I came across one for Vietnamese! We downloaded it on the spot and found she can practice the s and the sh letters. We played "Is this the sound" while she was doing my hair. And then my hairdresser, Loc, was laughing at herself because she got so many answers wrong. But I could tell that the questions were good and well-pronounced and the recordings were clear. So I told her to download it herself and practice at home. Now she has the full version and she called to tell me that she thinks she understands the difference between Sue and Shoe now. nice app!

Easy to use, but lacking in effective pedagogical content

Regardless which version of American English Pronunciation you download, the most they offer is some listen and repeat of random words and phrases and some traditional listening discrimination drills with items in random order. With no explicit focus on the sound being contrast for the target sound and no attention to the sound’s environment (the place in the word or the following sound), these apps are not as pedagogically effective as they could be. The graphic user interface is quite easy to use and fairly well designed, but the pedagogical content does not make these effective for a basic introduction to these sounds.
