Amos: Another MIDI OSC Source

By Justin Rhoades

This app is only available on the App Store for iOS devices.

Amos is a reactive MIDI instrument. It sends MIDI notes to your software synths, outboard gear and desktop DAWs like GarageBand, ProTools and Live. Amos supports CoreMIDI (USB and WiFi), DSMI, and the Line6 MIDI Mobilizer.

Here's a video of Amos in action:

In Amos's physics-simulated room, collisions between objects trigger MIDI notes. Up to five duration discs (whole note, half note, quarter note, eighth note, sixteenth note) can be grabbed and thrown around the room. There are two 6-octave keyboards that can be configured via the Settings menu. When a disc strikes a keyboard key, it takes on that key‘s note value and emits that value for each collision until a new key is struck. Tilting the device controls the gravity in the room.

USB MIDI Requirements:
• iPad
• Apple iPad USB Camera Connection Kit
• Class-compliant USB MIDI interface

WiFi MIDI Requirements:
• A Mac, Linux, or Windows computer on the same WiFi network as your iPad
• Some kind of MIDI capable desktop app (Garage Band, Pro Tools, Logic, Live, Sonar, etc.)

See for further setup instructions.

Superior midi generator app

I perform in as a solo ambient guitarist and this app was recommend to me. It does a great job of generating pseudo random midi note information. The only drawback is that it's difficult to set the properties for each individual disk (the app refers to a long tap as the method but I'm not sure what means).

Needs sound on iPad being used

It appears that this app only operates as a midi controller. That is potentially cool, but I want to be able to play around with the app and create sounds that I can hear right off my iPad without having to use another app in conjunction.

This app is a midi controller only, and is useless without utilizing external hardware or coupling its activity with another app.

If you're planning on just playing around with this on your iPad (and not plugging up to anything external or utilizing another app in conjunction), you'll be disappointed.

This app generates no sound alone.

Excellent MIDI Controller

MIDI implementation is flawless, much better than the hit and miss of Yamaha's tnr-i. Usefulness is another thing. Control is very random, so if you are not into aleatoric music you may be disappointed.
