I have not been on Ancestry very long, but I have found some amazing things. I joined Ancestry at the suggestion of one of my cousins who answered a Facebook query about a woman named Z......, and when she answered to the positive, she found a possible second or third cousin in NM...on my father’s side of the family. Having a very common surname, but ethnic origins in an unusual place, we both decided to search further on Ancestry. We discovered my grandfather had a brother that neither of us knew of. Following leads from Ancestry, we traced leads back to 19th century, CE. and found documents that opened a previously unknown chapter of our family history. My grandfather’s oldest brother who married in Bessarabia and emigrated with his young wife and his first child, were living in the same city I grew up in...yet that wing of our family remained unknown until our discovery. My great uncle G.... had nine children, and all but one had married and each child had one to four children. Our family grew overnight exponentially! Some offspring changed surnames to conceal ethnic origins, some changed religions, but all still identified with their family origins.
As a historian, this is very exciting and intersects material I have been researching on civil unrest and emigration to North America from 1890 to 1914. I think Ancestry is a wonderful tool that can open new paths to understanding cultural origins! I highly recommend this app!
Our family really loves this app. It’s fun and exiting finding new facts about your family. It’s incredible to see my grandmothers name on old census records. We have found lots of distant family. It was fun joking to my cousin how now we don’t have wonder if we were adopted LOL. Sometimes you can truly feel like ‘how the heck can I be related to some of the nuts in my family tree.’ Well the proof is in the pudding, there’s no denying it. One word of caution, be very careful when confirming facts LOL. Knowing that a specific member in my tree, 3 generations back was really the milk mans son, I confirmed too hastily the mom’s husband and messed up the tree starting from him back. But it’s great fun. Family secrets come alive right before your eyes. A friend found a brother she didn’t know she had because her daddy had an affair many decades back but they became close family and she attended his wedding. So see, there can be some happy endings if you are brave enough, muaaahahahaha! In our family we have a streak of white hair right in the front, which is pretty dramatic and we found a distant cousin, whom the resemblance between her and I was like WOW! So if you suspect stuff about your Kin and you are mentally prepared for the knowledge hidden within, spit in a cup, and just wait and see. Cuz you just never know, you could be related to me! Muahahahahaha!
“JUST DO IT!”
Handy when your in a pinch
It’s a decent app, not always the friendliest to maneuver through. Always make sure to double the information you can’t just add people cause there’s a hint. And just because you use this system does not make you a full fledged genealogist, always make sure to check and cite your sources, and make the effort to do some leg work and go to county clerks offices and registries and get actual copies of some documents it feels amazing and is so much more fun to physically go through these old documents! My great aunt has been working on our families genealogy since 1955 and has gone to England, Germany and all over the U.S. gathering information. I’ve been helping her for 6 years now and we have over 11, 3 inch binders of amazing family history and it’s so much more rewarding to have the physical information! Also if anyone is looking for a good computer program for genealogy that doesn’t require internet to look at your info Personal Ancestry File its a great program that lets you upload to Ancestry. It’s very old and what most would consider outdated but you can find conversions for Mac and all sorts of other operations systems and you don’t have to be Mormon to use it thankfully lol!
