A review by Paul Shard (famous for the award winning cruising documentary Distant Shores): Well I have finally found a solution that works GREAT in the form of an App for my phone! I have been testing it for some time, but they recently came up with an update and it is now really great!

Compatible with external GPS : gns2000 , Dual xgps, Bad Elf and Garlmin glo. With an external GPS you can use Anchor! on a Wifi only iPad and get improved accuracy on other models.
Compatible with Flic buttons (Bluetooth low energy buttons, they are splashproof, work locally and no hub is required to work with anchor)
Your 5 star rating on the app store makes us work harder to provide updates, don't hesitate to rate Anchor!
When the alarm is on, this app will use GPS in the background to be able to alert you. Continued use of GPS in the background can dramatically decrease battery life: don't forget your charger on board.
The remote mode uses an external server that could be shut down without notice by its provider or run slow . The remote mode needs data connexion and 2 apple devices
Use of the remote mode comes is subject to the agreement to this supplementary copyright notice:
In addition to the applicable standard EULA, permission is not granted to use Anchor! to track someone without his dedicated and recent consent.
Provided maps are not nautical charts.
Added compatibility to Flic buttons (Bluetooth low energy buttons, they are splashproof, work locally and no hub is required to work with anchor)

Love the app but.....
In the past, it’s been shutting itself off while running in the background but by leaving the app open and on screen while sleeping seams to keep it from shutting itself off. But since the last update, it is now having trouble in two separate ways.
Issue number one: It has been having difficulties tracking the satellite system causing the app to show wild anomalous exaggeration in tracking of the boat position. I shut down the app, restarted it and it now seams to show a more normal track line.
Issue number two: I left the boat this evening accidentally setting off the alarm. I opened the app on my iPhone and shut it down by swiping it away. The app somehow reopened itself and set the alarm off again. I closed the app once again and continued on to shore. Again the app opened itself up setting off the alarm. I once again closed down the app. The next time it went off, I left the app on but didn’t set a position for the anchor. This kept the alarm from sounding but with the app using my phones gps feature, my battery quickly ran down.

Thanks for this review.
update: IOS 12.1 tends to kill apps in background: please upgrade to IOS 12.2 for more reliability.
The gps issue is on the IOS side and has been reported to Apple, a few user have it, I had it once and had to restart the phone.
The auto-relaunch is a new feature mitigating IOS killing the app.
Though not recommended, you can opt out auto relaunch in settings.
With auto relaunch enabled you can still stop the app: when you close the app with no alarm (no circle) : it won’t relaunch and it won’t run in background draining your battery.
Great Anchor Watch App
Just took a trip from Seattle to Glacier Bay AK and back using this app and it worked great. Just launch the app when you are ready to anchor and set the anchor location when you drop the hook. It will track the boat position from that point forward showing on the screen everywhere the boat has been since the set. It allows you to then set a radius alarm for any distance but since it will show the boat position when you back up to set the anchor you will see the radius at that time. Very reassuring to know how your boat is tracking and to do a quick check at night. It does consume a lot of battery so we run it with an iPad left charging. The app works in background as long as you don't close the app so you can use your device for other things and come back to the app and it will show the tracks made since you left it. Need to put your device in a location where it both gets GPS and someone can hear the alarm. Anywhere in the main cabin worked for us. It works with or without internet.
Great app - however
Used the app for over a week and found it very useful. It was a challenge to move the anchor icon when setting the anchor as it was too small. Also, the vessel icon was so small that it was difficult to find in the track lines if you move around a lot. I woke up every two hours for a week to verify our position and found we were in the position as shown on the app. Only on a few cases did we exceed the perimeter and activate the alarm for some reason. There was no wind and light current and the perimeter circle was 180ft beyond the anchor distance, just a few spikes out and back - go figure. Better to be safe than sorry. In any case we will continue to use the app.
Developer Response ,
You can put your finger on thumb under the anchor icon, the zone enabled to move it is much larger than the icon itself.
