Animal-Free is an online product checker and pocket reference guide for identifying common and hidden animal ingredients. Whether you're vegan, vegetarian, part-time veg, or simply trying to shop veg-friendly, Animal-Free will help you make conscientious shopping decisions.
Scan a barcode to lookup products in an online database and find out what users think. Add new products to the database and share your findings to help others or voice your opinion by voting on existing products.
The ingredients listed in Animal-Free can be viewed by those that are always animal derived and those that are sometimes animal derived. Additionally, Animal-Free features a list of commonly misunderstood or unfamiliar vegan ingredients that will help aspiring or new vegans expand their dietary horizons.
Being vegan has never been easier! Bon appétit!
If you have any additions or corrections that you would like to see made to the Animal-Free database please email us: firstname.lastname@example.org
* Note: The built-in barcode scanner requires a device with an HD camera and iOS 4.0 or above. Users without a camera can still lookup products using the product name or barcode in the search box. iPhone 3GS support coming soon.
What's New in Version 2.0.1
Fixed crash for devices running iOS 3.1.3.
This app has a ton of potential and will only get better the more folks use and contribute to it. I'm not sure why others report problems with the barcode scanner, mine works just fine. It DOES take some practice, but I soon realized it works every time when I start from about 5 inches away to let it focus before slowly bringing the camera closer until the bars FILL the width of the scanner. Easy once you get the hang of it.
Also thought I should mention that I'm not a vegan nor vegetarian! I just feel strongly about ingredient transparency in foods & cosmetics and I can use this app for both, which is great.
Finally, I only found one bug: if you're adding an item to the database and fill out the name of the item before selecting its criteria (non-v, vegetarian, vegan) and then go back: poof! name is gone. Everything else stays just fine, but you have to re-enter the name.
Thanks for such a brilliant app and I can't wait to watch it really take off! :)
Nice - but is it authoritative?
The only problem I can see with this app is that the product items are submitted by users, not trained researchers who have traced a product's ingredients. It's cool to scan bar codes and come up with answers, but beware of the answers as you would Wikipedia, which has the same limitation of authority. It's also very cool to be able to add products that I like, but I would feel more comfortable if there was someone making sure something was really vegan before adding it to the database. I have given 4 stars so as not to drive people away, but until I know more about whether there is anyone checking up on things, I think it's more like 3 or 3 and a half. If I learn that there is someone keeping an eye on it and researching items and products, that rating will go up.
Good app, but...
… the scanner hasn't worked from day 1. I use it with an iPod Touch, and when I go to Whole Foods I use their wifi to do my shopping. But I've never gotten the scanner to work, so I'm wondering if there's an update in the works that will allow all users to have the scanner available to them.
Other than that, it's a pretty good app. There are still some items, however, that aren't in the database as to whether they're Vegan-compatible.
