Customer Reviews

Working though the App slowly but frustrated

This app has excellent graphics and gives a broad range of preset characters to work with. However, it is difficult to have more than two characters at the same time on the screen, otherwise they jump all over the place. Many of the presets do not work as indicated in the tutorial or simply do not exist. For example, when choosing a character from the wizard there is no choice of motion other than still or walking even thought the tutorial states by pressing "action" you have a choice of walking, jumping, still,etc.. There is no "action". I have found that the tutorial announcer speaks too fast and assumes I know as much as he. Slow down and assume I'm a dummie, please! He makes everything seem simple but when following the tutorial in real time it performs differently. I hope a more user friendly version will come along soon that actually matches the tutorial.

Amazing piece of software

I have been thoroughly enjoying myself as I've been learning how to animate. I love this software. I didn't realize that I could animate and thought I'd have to draw every frame but that's not the case here. The bone rigging of characters is an awesome feature, that I haven't seen any other program. The drawing tools are vector based and take a bit of time to get used to but are certainly oriented towards folks that don't have drawing skills. As well, I enjoyed the content library and was surprised that it even existed. Now, I can't wait to import more of my sketches into the program and start animating them. The only drawback I would say is that the tutorials and manuls are quite wordy and need to be reviewed in order to understand how to use the software. Definitely worth the money though.

confusing drawing conventions make this hard to use

I have used computer drawing tools on the Mac (MacPaint, MacDraw, Canvas, OmniGraffle) for over two decades. There are several conventions that virtually every environment uses, having to do with how you select an object, determine its properties, and apply changes to it. I purchased Anime Studio Debut to learn animation. The program itself is capable and well-constructed, and ran fine on my Core 2 duo laptop under 10.6.8, but this program does not follow standard Mac drawing conventions. For example, it uses a separate tool to scale an object, instead of grabbing its handles with a select tool and pulling them. After a couple of weeks I found that the effort needed to learn completely different ways to draw, applicable only to this environment, was not worth the result. I have switched to Toon Boom Studio, which is a bit more expensive but a lot more capable, and uses much more standard approaches to creating and editing drawing objects.
