A Classic Butchered to Exploit IAP
I love Tales of Phantasia, but this game is designed to exploit its fans. It has been deliberately changed from the original versions for this reason.
Yes it has some tough control issues, and those considered I'd probably give the game four stars.
First the battle tuning has been dramatically changed, making enemies much more powerful than you without the IAPs.
Second, the game has resets if you die available only with IAPs, without them you have to go back to your last manual save. This would be like the original version, but they actually disabled many save points in dungeons to further this inconvenience. To be clear: there are far less save points in dungeons, so dying and not using an IAP is far more punishing than it was in the original. Also remember the difficulty tuning is a lot harder, so you're more likely to die.
Third, beneficial item drop rates have been reduced so you'll have less gels and such to recover with.
And finally the game requires you to be online at all times to save, likely as a form of DRM to avoid people getting around the IAPs.
Namco could have released this game for $10 easy and many fans would buy it. There were even IAP ways to still release the game as very playable with benefits. But instead they butchered the design of the game in order to exploit the consumer for frequent IAP purchases.
Great game, but needs adjustment
This game is a VERY good port. Music has been improved, original voice acting is excellent, and it is fun to play.
I haven't noticed drop rates being bad, I'm getting items from all the monsters I fight. I do notice some save points being turn off. You can buy the power orbs so you can have easier boss fights, but I've managed to do well enough without them.
There's really only two In-app purchases.
* Power Orbs to fight bosses. These strengthen your team and save you from wiping.
* Experience books give you experience. I guess this if you don't want to grind... but grinding is necessary in Tales games, so I don't see the point. And if you want to level fast and pay for it... I see no harm, really.
The part that really needs to be fixed is the offline use. You must be online to save and load your game. I think it's a security measure, but it's lazy. Add encryption to the files and there's no issue with offline saves. Fix this and I'll change my rating to 5.
This game is better than what people say it is
ToP is actually a really fun game to play. A lot of people ate mad at the level of difficulty of this game, the impractical touch based control setup and few save points.
This game wasn't designed to be an exact original of the PS1.
I've never played ToP but from what I've played on my iPhone, I think they did a really good job. This game is hard. You will die. But you don't need any of the IAP's to progress. There are plenty of quick save opportunities and plenty of save opportunities. My suggestion is to level up a lot that way bosses and enemies are a lo easier to face and defeat.
I think the control is just fine. Normal attacks are all on the left side of the screen and special abilities are all swiped based motions. Read the manual to understand how to fight and it gets easier. If you're complaining about the game then you can go back to playing candy crush or subway surfers.
