Customer Reviews

Okay, not great, for awhile.

The app decided to lock up with a message about "not being connected to internet". I am, but the message remains, and the app remains totally non-functional. Similar happened on phone, can't use it there either. Now I'm paying for a subscription that doesn't put out.

When working right, the app is quirky, and annoying. It continually tries to obscure content with an advertising banner (usually Fry's) but it doesn't make me any more likely to read it. It does tick me off, and it affects the advertiser negatively. They can do better than this can't they?

Good old-school newspaper experience

The 20th-century print newspaper was the heir to two centuries of learning how to report and lay out the news, and web-formatted versions haven't really replaced its functionality. I like the ability to read a paper online as a single daily edition, and ideally in the way it is formatted in print. There's always PDF, but it's not very versatile. This AZ Daily Star app is the best of both worlds, allowing you to read a facsimile of the print edition with decent zooming features, but also making it easy to switch to plain-text versions of the articles. I actually find the iPad version preferable to the desktop computer Web E-edition.

[Update 4/2017:] I also read NY Times and Washington Post via native iOS apps that provide full print-version view, but find that the Star's app is the most versatile to use, with the right balance between page layout and text version. Star is too top-heavy on sports these days but that's not the app's fault.
