Planning a visit to the Art Institute of Chicago? Let the museum help you navigate its nearly one million square feet and thousands of works of art on view. This app offers you 50 personalized tours through the collections of the Art Institute using the museum’s Wi-Fi network and indoor positioning system. Featuring several types of tours, this app allows you to design exactly the visit you want. One set of tours will take you through the museum’s major collections, such as Impressionist art, contemporary art, African art, or both early and 20th-century American art. Another group offers tours of works throughout the entire museum grouped around common themes, such as Chicago artists, self-portraits, children in art, or the architecture of the museum. Short on time or have a specific agenda at the museum? Choose one of our tours organized by time — an hour, two hours, a full day — or by occasion, such as relaxing on your own or impressing your out-of-town guests.
Every tour features between 6 and 10 works of art with directions, as both maps and lists, for how to find them. Every work of art is accompanied by a brief entry that explains the work’s connection to a theme or the significance of the work in the history of art. Additionally, the app features information on and directions to the museum’s current special exhibitions. There’s no need to feel overwhelmed by the treasures of the Art Institute of Chicago! Use this app to follow your own individual interests, learn about art, and enjoy one of the world’s greatest art museums.
What's New in Version 1.0.2
Miscellaneous bug fixes.
Wish this had a Favorites feature
If this app let me mark my favorite paintings/ works of art, I would love it.
Then I could take a virtual tour before traveling to the Musuem or relived trip to the Musuem.
Also if I could see a list of my favorites by floor and gallery, I could then stroll through the galleries listening to the commentary about works I care about instead of a pre-packaged theme your. With individualized technology you can really make the your personal if the app went just a bit further.
An app like this could do so much... Help organize your trip, enrich your knowledge and... Not crash. This app fails on all fronts. Totally useless.. After wasting 30mins of a valuable half a day at the museum trying to use this app, I deleted it. Just don't even bother. Ask a docent your questions- that's the best way to see the museum.
Don't waste your time on this app. It crashes so frequently that it makes using the (inaccurate) mapping feature useless. I tried using it this weekend and after about 15 crashes (yes, I was that patient) I surrendered and used the paper map.
Additionally, the functionality of the app is dismally limited.
If the Art Institue of Chicago is listening, here's my input:
Start over and make sure that the app is stable and that the mapping actually works.
Also, reimagine the users' app experience.
Imagine an app where users could actually browse for specific pieces by theme, style, artist, title, etc... and then add them to their itenerary. This itenerary could be tied to a user account so that a user could create the itenerary via the mobile app or your website (you also now have specific user account information - useful?). Imagine that the users can set a specific starting point for their itenerary, a specific order of pieces to see, or the itenerary could default to 'shortest/fastest' route - selectable by the user. Imagine that users could name/save multiple iteneraries for multiple visits (more visits? Useful?) and even share their itenraries with their friends or others (word of mouth advertising to increase support/traffic?) - possibly even have a public/social media integration to rank favorite iteneraries, most used, most popular, etc... Imagine expert or celebrity tours that are created by artist, style, theme, interests, art in movies, etc... There could be a nearly infinite list of tours - instead of the very limited selection currently offered. Imagine even fun tours, like "Ferris Bueller", etc...
There's so much potential to improve the usability and functionality. Integrate it with your existing website and gallery database and you have a WINNER that will help you gather user/supporter information, usage, etc... and help drive traffic and support. So much potential.....so much current disappointment....
