Promising! ~LWitherspoon

I used the old version of this daily for 5 years. Mainly for hobby (tabletop rpgs), sometimes for my job. I don’t own a pc, so I used it on my phone as a poor man’s photoshop. I was able to get some impressive results doing things that required fine details. I was surprised with what I could accomplish using only my phone and finger. I tried the other popular apps, Artstudio was clearly more powerful and more serious.

Now it’s got a new, even more powerful engine with unlimited layers, cloud storage (allowing me to switch back and forth from my phone to my new iPad), and plenty of other new features. I would have given 4 stars, since there’s no user manual and some of the settings/preferences don’t allow me to do what I used to on the old app, but I took some of my problems to their forum and discovered that the developer is very responsive and LISTENS to what their users are saying.
I feel my money was well spent, and I’m having fun playing with this new thing whenever I get a chance.

Not as user friendly as the old version.

Evil evala

Here are a couple of things that I don’t really like about this new art studio. These are probably because I don’t know how to use it but, eh... I was able to figure the other one out.

-The canvass rotates when you zoom in and out. Unlike computers you can rotate the object the program is on, it’s just really off putting to have everything move around. This is one of the reasons I choose the legacy version rather than any other phone-art program.

-It’s really hard to change line art colors? This was a problem for me in the old version too, I was hoping something would be done to fix it. I realize this is made more for people who make painting and that’s all fine and dandy but that should be a Standard feature. Sometimes you need to change a layer’s colors selectively. Filters shouldn’t be the only option. Maybe just my own inability to find out how to use it but since this is such a new app I can’t really ask google.

-The UI is annoying. It just is. I don’t like the sliders at the bottom or the hidden away customization for brushes. The old way where everything was in the same place was much better. The different types of brushes don’t need to be accessed immediately unlike how you want that brush to look. Your pre-programed stuff isn’t that great.

I’m legitimately sorry I waisted almost $12 on this. I don’t really have that great of a job in the first place this was a mistake. This app is a downgrade. Get the old one.

Developer Response

- Canvas rotation was available also in old version. In both version you can disable it. Just go to Artstudio>Preferences>Canvas Rotation.
- If lineart is on separate, transparent layer fo thi: lock transparency (Layers popover>Gear icon>Lock Transparency or in top menu), then paint with a new color. Transparency is locked, so you will modify only pixels colors keeping transparency unchanged.
- New brush editor is much more advanced, we had to add many new settings to make brush strokes more real. If you don't like built-in brushes (there are over 100 of them) and don't want to examine brush settings - you can download millions of brushes from Internet in the industry standard ABR and TPL format.

Line Smoothing still bad...

Yeah - I said it!

ArtStudio (Updated review: 6th rewrite)
Thanks for all the improvements in the last 1.1 updates.
You even fixed a few I reported.

My hand trembles a bit. I need smoothing on all the time. I can't draw with this app until smoothing is faster. You need to have line smoothing work more like Sketchbook, Sketch Club and Concepts. The drag of line an inch or more behind stylus is too much an offset to work with.
Maybe your team tests with iPad Pro? You need to test smoothing at 50% on a plain 2017 iPad - 9.7. I have no issue with Sketchbook or Concepts smoothing on regular iPad.
If you don't have one in shop, test on a friend's.

I also want option for Created brushes and Favorite brushs and settings to be backed-up in iCloud Drive.
iOS 10 does NOT have Files App.

Fullscreen Mode needs color-picker to be usable.

Needs distance/perspective grid.

Would like to have resizable, floating reference image (that is not considered part of a layer).

Needs organizing pictures by date-started, date-edited and tags such as red, blue, scribble, animals, people, landscape, fan art, etc.

Note to Artists:
If you can't import brushes with Safari, use your laptop/desktop. Go to Deviant Art. Search for "free PS brushes" or "free abr". Download and unzip. Go to Apple website and login to iCload Drive. Upload abr files. Get back on iPad. Open iCloud Drive app. The brushes now have Art Studio logo. Tap and send to art app.

I hope Lucky Clan keeps improving it.

Developer Response

Storing brushes in iCloud - maybe we will add this option later. We didn't do it yet because managing files in Cloud Drive is very difficult, you have to manage things like: downloading from iCloud, resolving conflicts, transferring iCloud<>Local if user turns off iCloud etc.

Color-picker (eyedropper) in full screen mode - you can use "Long press" gesture to activate it.
