Amazing deck building app port

Ascension: Chronicle of the Godslayer is an amazing deck building game where 2-4 players build decks on the fly out of some basic starting cards and then whatever cards are revealed in the center. The app is an amazing port of the board game and speeds up gameplay drastically. I have played this game for countless hours using the online features to find others online to play against. The tutorial is pretty decent in explaining the main fame but once you start buying expansions (if you love it like I do you definitely will be) there is little to no explanation of how they work. That being said a simple online tutorial or manual about the set clears everything up and you'll be right back on top of your game. Stoneblade also does a great job of making each new set available on the app not too long after the sets are released in board game format. All in all its an amazing game and the online features are fantastic. Finding a group gets a little difficult sometimes but it's usually not very hard. Be wary though, no one is going to take it easy on you but you'll eventually learn and start having victories of your own. I can honestly say that I have become an amazing ascension player thanks to this app and will continue playing as more sets come out for it.

Marred by mired AI

The card game Ascension is s pretty solid game. It has wonderful synergy between cards and a mechanic that is quick paced and has a good amount of strategic deck building. The gameplay drawback is its ridiculous randomness, particularly when you purchase expansions. At times these expansion sets are reminiscent of playing Chutes and Ladders or Candy Land since you can randomly gain free cards by the dozen. That said, if you are selective with which expansions you buy the game is better balanced. Check board game geek to see which ones are ideal.

The real issue with this isn't the gameplay. It's the slowdown. If the AI gets certain cards, too many cards in hand, or too many cards interacting with each other on the table it grinds to a halt. I've sat and stared for a minute or two waiting for the computer to slog through placing a few cards on the table. In a game where turns last an average of 10 seconds this is truly unforgivable, especially on an iPhone 6. A game as streamlined as Ascension shouldn't consist of 20 minutes staring at nothing and 3 minutes playing. Give this one a pass until playdek does something about the terrible slowdown.

Addicted to Ascension

Ascension is one of the most addicting apps and card games I have encountered. After 2 years loyally playing it, I decided it was high time I wrote a review. The game is clean, beautiful, humorous, strategic, and fast. I've got my friends hooked on it too.

The greatest feature of this game is its variability. Every match is unique and interesting. Your strategy has to evolve because the types of cards that arise vary from match to match.

I've never run into any problems with the AI. The easy setting might be a bit too easy for experienced players, but the hard setting is nothing to be scoffed at. The AI on hard plays like an experienced person, but is not impossible to beat by any means. Not satisfied by the AI for one reason or another? I highly recommend getting your friends involved so you can play matches against them. Or set up matches with random opponents- that's also an option.

This game was meticulously designed, which is clearly reflected in its app. I highly recommend this game to anyone who enjoys strategic card games.
