Great app, please update for iOS 11

I have found this app incredibly useful as I learn ASL. In particular, I have been able to ramp up my learning by changing the number of letters a word has and the speed the words are delivered (independently) as I’m quizzed. (The far right is “deaf speed,” or about the speed at which a native speaker of ASL would sign; the difference between the app and IRL would be the amount of clipping —among other “accent”—that real hands can incorporate into the transitions between letters. In the app, each letter sign is distinct and discrete.) I keep hoping for a full on signing app, but I can imagine that would require a lot of time, energy, and programming knowledge. The app maker, Bill Vickers, shares a LOT of resources for teachers and students for FREE online at lifeprint . He’s already giving so much to the Deaf Community, so someone with the know-how should step in to help support updating, upgrading, and developing apps.

Best app for finger spelling

The word choice is excellent, there are so many words in this app, it's common to see new words since it has a good variety of vocabulary.

I've been using this all day and have felt the different stages of learning:

From practicing to just recognize the letters, to saying the letters in my mind as they are shown, to spelling along with it as I see it, to being able to finish and guess the rest of the word, even to start to "feel" the word and fill in the gaps because of the shape of common suffixes "tion" "ing", etc.. All the while increasing speed but not too much. I am now able to understand words at about 3/4 of full speed on 'any' length (I'm a good persistent learner).

Thanks Bill Vicars for all you do.

The only way this app could possibly be any better is if it had pre-recorded videos of real people finger spelling at different speeds. Deaf people and others often abbreviate since they spell so fast they are shaping the next letter before they're even finished with the letter they are on!

Anyways, this app is good. I don't even use the typing feature since it's too slow typing it in, I just use the 'show answer' feature because usually you know when you're right, it's faster that way, you can get in more words, and the more time your brain spends practicing reception, the more progress you'll see. I am persistently patient.

An essential app.

I've been studying ASL on and off for 6 years, and my worst area has always been fingerspelling and reading letters quickly. Using this app and practicing the words after I answer them has improved my fingerspelling and comprehension significantly in just a few weeks. 20 minutes in the app every day or two is all it takes, and the speed setting and extensive vocabulary make it easy to adjust the app to your skill level. Fingerspelling is such an important skill to have in ASL, and the only way to improve is with regular practice, which makes this app an essential for anyone who's serious about learning the language.
